I've done this in several ways, what is your favorite way to get the rings on? Wind or spread?

Spread. Winding can scratch the piston.

Use thin feeler gauge strips esp at the gap and slide them over.

Never use thumbs on JP rings, they are so stiff they will draw blood, actually best to never use them as they take too long to bed in.
