I live alone and only go to the doctor and grocery store. I once in a while have a visitor. In the shower this morning I realized that my last shower was last Saturday. This caused a flashback.

In the 50s and 60s we would visit my grandmother in Elba, Alabama. She had no electricity, gas or running water, so the house was heated with a wood stove and in the kitchen, she had a fancy wood cook stove. Fancy because it had a water tank on the side to make hot water. To fill it or to get water for any purpose, she went outside and used the handpump well to fill a bucket.

Saturday night was bath night. I big round wooden “tub’ was brought in the kitchen and filled with warm water (cold from the well and scalding hot from the stove). The women and girls went first, then the grown men, then the young boys, and in the 60s the one stinky teenager boy last (me).

My grandmother made the soap. It was pig fat, lye, and a little of any perfume she was given as a present. I’m not sure if I was cleaner or dirtier when I came out of that tub, but I suppose my teenage boy stink was gone. When you stood up to get out of the tub, naked, my grandmother would pour a bucket of tepid water over you to rinse you off.

TomU visited me for a few minutes this week - I hope I didn't smell too bad. :)

P.S. It's weird being alone. When my wife was alive, I took 7-10 showers a week. One every morning and more depending on how demanding the "honey do list" was that week.

The way water, gas and electric bills are going up trying to save money become much harder, lucky before I retired in 2013 I put up solar panels so in credit for my electricity and now the kids are gone the water bill did go down but now they are charging more and gas well it's just gone up again, we have gas stove and hot water so I been doing a few cut backs with the shower time or a few days without, just wish the wife stop having 20/30 minute showers, what is it with women and showers, my wife is not the hardest of house work or house duties so she is never really that dirty to spend so much time in the shower.
When I was young after my mother died I lived with my grandmother for a few years she had no hot water and a big iron claw bath tub our nightly baths were 2 kettles on the stove heated up and add cold water so really at bath time it was mostly a splash around with that big bath tub after I left she got hot water system put in and a shower unit, but the water bill was cheaper doing the bath tub slash.

I stay in the shower until the water runs cold ..... with a tankless water heater, that can be a long time! With advancing years everything hurts on getting up in the morning. A 20 minute shower, as hot as I can stand, gets the kinks out.

As a kid, I remember those baths with water heated on the stovetop. The worst part was drying off in an environment that was rather chilly in winter time.

I think it was those memories that gave me the incentive to study hard for 9 years ......because I did not want to live like that for the rest of my life!

When I lived in Normandy for a term, the old couple I lived with had no hot running water. One saucepan of hot water with the otherwise cold shower every morning. It was fine in the summer...

Your in good company Greg. I gave up daily showers since covid. They're bad for the skin

Yes thats message I took from a similar environment too. Ice on the inside of the windows, leaks in the roof and holes in the floor meant I was damn sure my own kids were never going to see that sort of life.

Sauna is a great way to clean with minimum water and cleans from the inside out.

I got used to a 2-minute shower in the Navy in the 70s, but I luxuriate now and take at least 5 minutes.

Did you ever do a sauna then Swedish shower?

You pull the cord and about 50 gallons of COLD water pours over you, with NO WAY to make it stop.

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

No, never tried that one. That sounds more Russian than Swedish. We find a soft patch of snow to roll in. In younger days, a bathtub size

hole was kept open in the lake to plunge in. The ice blocks removed were stood up around the hole for a windbreak.
