I couldn’t agree more with that!

I fitted an 850 kit, had the head flowed, and re dialled the cams, and this combination transformed it. It gave it the bottom end of a 750 twin and the 6-8k screaming ability as well. And the sound through those peashooters when it came on cam was just fabulous !

I also agree they’re a doddle to kick start, even at 850cc with a raised CR. That’s why I removed the (very heavy) e start gubbins from mine.

The bigger stroked motors are a bit different though, they can be a bit awkward to kick start.

On balance, IMHO, in many ways, a nicely sorted 850 is the optimum variation of this motor for the road.

Both my 990 Beadling motors start easily on the button or kick.

Without the usual elaboration ,
With a Starter Motor - IF the ' Ign ' has its own off'n'on ( kill switch ? ) ,
Winding it over for a few seconds , has primed the cylinders & brought up the oil ,
so Flicking Ign. ON at that stage - Its Running .No Kick Back , No wrist twisting .
To elaborate ,
The Dreaded V4 2 litre , with 11 switches on the dash - a NORMAL start was
pushing over kickback till it caught .After prime of a few pumps & wiggling foot
to enrich . Weber 28-36 Vacume Secondary enrichment jet .

WHEREAS , if you turned the Starter On , watched the oil pressure guage , Turned Ign. ON
when pressure got to 80 ( or over 60 ) it Was Running . Smoothly , self enriched . Fuss Free .

Therefore , if a chap has a few switches & a electric starter - Turning it over for a few seconds
untill the ignition is brought in , can be considered sensable for more than a few reasons .

I had no idea

I did some reading, lucas tvs india making automotive starters.

I see It's a gear reduction starter.

What is the difference with the Dave Madigan starter?

More kw?

It's a more powerful motor.
The original starter had trouble turning over my T160s 973cc (bored and stroked Hyde) engine.

Thanks Les. Still puzzling to me, how cars of that era were equipped with reliable starters, -20F here in winter, would get the job done.
Obviously, motorcycles needed a more compact starter. BUT, these things missed the engineering mark by a mile.
My '74 Shovelhead hated to go in the cold, (stand on the kicker AND hit the starter) but at 50F & above, it had plenty.
Multis have an easier time of it.
My T160 came with the Dave Madigan fitted, and the original in a box.

The original starter generally has no trouble turning a standard engine if in good condition.

Note that they are not directly interchangeable as the bush in the case has to be changed to fit the Madigan starter.

Is that after a good ride ! I 😄 .
Sadly, no. Just got the gage installed. I did warm the engine about 10 minutes, pressure came down to 92PSI.

The roads have been salted for winter. My bikes are laid up for the winter now.

Edit: after 4" of rinsing rain, dry and 50F day. I took it up I-95 for 20 miles. 90PSI at 3000 rpm after fully warmed up. 😎

" any opinions on which replacement mufflers, 3into1 systems, look the best, sound the best , or look like the originals . "

You can see the L O N G shallow angle , of the ' collector ' HERE . 9 tho theres still some irregularity in comparitive angles , pipe to pipe .
Adjacently ! .
Woiks ones were generally a bit short & varied . Consideration to exactitude & equality in runs , wont slow it down . Hence CURVES rather'n BENDS .

Yeah, that helps like a hole in the head mate !

We should do a ride swap this year if we can coordinated at one meeting somewhere?

It might take me a few laps to get used to the slower pace tho…
