I have seen these front wheel rings on certain bikes that look like the old rotary dial phones of way back. Does anyone know what they are called, or how they attach? From what I can see they are not laced into the spokes.Where can I get them?

Like the ones on the front wheel of this.

They are called BOLOGNA SLICERS (or Baloney slicers) Some like them, I really don't.

Are they to help cool the brake or to slice bolonga?

Man, rotary dial phones. I can't even remember the last time I used one.

In the days of the Fading B r a k e s , they were used as Heat Sinks , to disperse brake heat attmosperically.
So were ' shrunk on ' interfearance fit to hub . Dont think ive seen a serious race bike wth em , could be ' annoying '
falling off . Brakes indeed .

Neither, that is why I don't like them. The go fast lads in the UK added these to make small brakes look bigger, they were supposed to draw heat away from the drum and help cool it, but looking at how many were mounted, barely touching the drum, they failed at that job. The added unsprung weight to the wheel and made handling worse. NOT a good idea.

Yeah, I couldn't really come up with a reason to have them, but I kind of thought they looked neat. As a heat sink, in principle it would work, but if they are not connected well then it really wouldn't do a whole lot.

Again. Sir Charles said it all. I believe he also likes crotchy tacos in his face, though, so his opinion may not be particularly valuable anymore..

They were certainly known as "Bacon slicers" in the UK.

Do I spy a B&T fan?

I've been told they did nothing at all to help with brake fade & were another one of those things designed to seperate posers from thier hard earned cash. At least that guy had the smarts to build his Triton with a Pre Unit motor as they should be.. Just my opinion but Tritons built with unit motors look silly to me and not period correct. I would so much rather see the Norton motor back in. No offence to those who do it I just don't like the look as much & it just seems wrong on some leval.

You are right, a few neurons went blank and crossed over to the old Moto Guzzi single with an outside flywheel. In any case, they are still ugly.

Looks kinda like a Norton motor to me!

"Bacon Slicers" were originally used by racers, and were shrunk onto the drum to stop the drum expanding and did slightly help with that and so reduced brake fade

The ones that the "caff racer" crowd fitted were merely bolt on....or clip on to the spokes for appearances and did nothing apart from giving the appearance of a race brake
