Hi
Collecting the next project tomorrow.
Its a roadbike.
300394 an 850.
You may smile :)
You may laugh :D
The previous owner had it for 31 years.
Photographs to follow.

All the best Chris

Quite an early 850.

Look forward to the pics.
Unless its been buried in the garden for 31 years...

Chris,

Not putting this one on the track?
Looking forwards to the photos - I see a 'patina' contest coming up...

Hi

Rohan guessed right :D

Patina

Rust & wildlife

Could not resist.

Well it certainly has that 'lived in' look!

I'd call it a draw, but you may have the edge...

Damn....I don't realize how lucky I was with what I started with.

I applaud you guys for brining them back from the dead like that.

Hi Andy

I think its the black tank & panels, your colour definitely brightens up the bike. Like you say I think its a draw.
Another one to rescue & at a price I could not ignore. Based on what suprises could be in store, & the cost of setting it straight. Roger the previous owner was very fair & appreciated the costs involved.
My usual agreement. If I build it & bring it back , will you take it out & ride it!
Roger is keen to do so.
He removed the front caliper as we could not move the bike. It came apart easily as did the brake hose, so thats good. He even pumped up the tyres which held air.
One of the pads was rusted to the disc!
On looking at it I am hopeful. My main concern is the engine bolts & studs, isolastics etc as the alloy & the bolts are very corroded. Also the steel tank is rusting badly at the front.

Plenty of release agent & heat over a period of time me thinks.

I am fitting the replacement oil tank to the 960MK2 ready for Donnington in August & have also started resurrecting the MK4 ( I nicked bits for the MK2) So have my hands full at the moment.

Chris, it just goes to show that you can't go wrong buying from a Norton Owner's Club member. All our machines are maintained to perfection ! It remains a puzzle though that some sellers regard it as a plus point !

Was he Sussex branch ? It looks like it's spent some time at the seaside. :)

Acetone + ATF and/or brake fluid + flame or hot air gun cycles + fire extinguisher handy will be a way of life for quite a while. Disc caliper may need above plus dry ice on the cap and a group prayer to open.

I may be to critical here but to be catagorized as a patina type motorcycle it ought to also be a runner.

Otherwise, it's just a barn find.
No offence!

Oh man pete, what a jerk to inject that realistic mood, its not polite to point and laugh at people's ugly pets or kids, sheeze. If any sense to matter ever soaks in on motorcyclers they just quite the hobby.

Only Realistic Sane message to attach to me > "M/c's are dangerous and expensive."
Best measure of ones health of body and mind is how much stress you can take on at once and not be injured by it. To me the sensible thing for these rust bucket examples would be hung up over the entrance of a biker bar or buried with the pilot mounted.

Hi Pete

It might run?
I dont know yet.
I do know I am going to strip it down first.
Cant see myself not tidying it up while I am in there but I agree Barn find id fine.

I have an idea. Since there may be few parts that will be usable and so much will be tossed, get one of the Nortons with a blown motor for parts. Rebuild the motors and restore the frames (assuming numbers match) and repaint the tanks and side panels. Or sell me one of them for the motor and frame.

Oh, come on. I have started with worse bikes that ended up as show winners. All it takes is lots of time, gumption and money. It helps to have a large stash of spare parts. These are the kinds of bikes I have accumulated over time. Finding a beautifully restored bike is easy, but expensive and much less rewarding. Rescuing a bike from near-death from rust and neglect is more like getting a dog from a rescue shelter than from a high-priced breeder.
