Fired up the '74 850 MK2 last week for the first time this year...came to life on one kick and continued to be a one kicker rest of day and further days. On Sunday I was preparing her to attend our brit bike owners club tech & chili day. Gave her a light spray down with engine degreaser followed by light water rinse off with a hand sprayer.
Terry cloth pat down and let her sit near an hour before I was ready to go...got nothing out of her, not a pop or bang after much kicking and tickling. Plugs out and no spark seen. Power checked and lights were good. Gave up and fired up the Velocette to attend the event. Two days have passed now and went ro recheck the Commando...sparks have returned without any other changes.
So looks like water instrusion. Ive had this previous when bike stood in the light rain for a few hours...no spark. All good next day and i put this down to the cloth coated HT cables getting soaked and cloth being under the crimped terminals at both ends...clue was the poor chap holding the plug by the HT lead against the head reporting getting nasty shocks!! I replaced with silicon rubber type and been great in rain.

So bit of a mystery about past Sunday's issue. Can the kill switch or ignition swtich suffer water ingress?
