Does anyone have any experience with the reproduction steel tanks available on eBay and elsewhere? For instance, are they a faithful reproduction in terms of geometry? Also, what about the thickness of the material; is it the same as the original? Any fitting or painting problems?

Thanks,

Jason

Well I would have to say they are not that good. The shape is not the same, In fact I didn't even fit it yet as I am going to do some filling and sanding on it at some point. If you take an original and a copy and sit then next to each other it is pretty obvious. As far as the gauge of steel I can't really tell too much difference. It was also coated with something that was a pain to remove, Inside and out. I think if I had it to do over I would just try to find a real one and redo it instead. Maybe someone else has had better luck, Sorry.

I have just imported a reproduction Interstate tank from Burton Bike Bits in the UK.

Arrived in 6 days!

The tank had a bit of a ripple where the gas lid neck has been "pulled".
A couple of payers of this primer and all gone.

It fitted on my mates 73 850 trouble free and it is at the painters.

Will try to post a picture when it comes back candy apple red.

cheers

Baldrick: Please supply any contact info, rough price of the interstate tank, etc? I'm off on a search of the internet looking for them, but anything you can give me would be much appreciated.

TIA, Gary

Hi Gary
The company is burtonbikebits.net and they are in UK.

Cost was 285 British pounds and freight was extra.

The people are friendly and you should get a quick response.

cheers

I almost bought a Pakie tank till I got it in my hands, the filler cap neck sat about 3/8" too high for starters and it had some kind of red sealer shit inside it. This was a new import tank.
I passed on it.

I feel like the luckest man in New Zealand...

Got a Commando

Got an understanding and participating wife(that will get Ludwigs mind going!)

Got the only good Interstate tank to come out of Pakistan!

The first tank I got was covered with a gray gook with rust showing through it the inside had a sticky dirty mess inside. The filler spigot was just a bit off kilter and it needed Bondo work but not horrible. The under side of the tank was much better than a stock Norton's way less creases just better work. The second tank had all this stuff fixed just a light coat of oil and some plastic wrap no rust no dirt well formed and well worth what I paid. When buying one make sure you work with a vender who can play in the yard with these boys, he need not be a hot head just very persistent. Good ones are made the trick is in getting one on your door.

Hey sounds like you brought your second tank from the same Pakistani factory.

maybe given the number of people living there they could have two factories...

or a disgruntled Norton owner went to Pakistan and kicked some ass?

Thanks for all the comments guys.

I have a fiberglass tank and ethanol bla, bla, bla, you know the rest of the story.

So I'm looking for a steel tank.

Factory? Are you kidding? I'll bet these are hammered out by the Taliban in some tent in the mountains!

I have one on my bike. I never had an original Norton tank to compare it to but that sounds like a good thing. It has some problems for sure, (1) the gas cap won't open all the way due to the filler neck improperly cut to receive an open cap, (2) quality of steel is iffy since I've already had to POR the tank and it's less than 3 yrs old! I think the rust is partially my fault though since I left my bike in Dad's jungle-humidity-esq garage for a year.

Good thing about the tank was that it was relatively cheap (about $200 if memory is correct). I have almost 4 coats of paint on that sucker so I think it'll last for awhile. From 15 feet away the average guy won't notice it's a fake....

I'll bet that U.S. soldier in Afghanistan doesn't think that Pakistani tank is cheap.
