Hi all I need to replace my tank and looking for someone that has purchases a painted tank and side covers from India. Just want to use a supplier that is of reasonable quality. Any recommendations are appreciated

Good Indian sellers on eBay are Royal Choppers and Pummy8081, but I would not buy a painted tank from them but bare steel as even from them it will need work.
Yep...like battery cover upper front support bracket spot welded on in the wrong place, and threads in rear tank mounting hole not there???
To be fair both matters were dealt with promptly and to my satisfaction

Have a look at the BOTTOM of the tank you are considering.
Stamped from one piece, with all the required indentations, somewhat like the original?

Or is it cobbled up from several small pieces, all (poorly) welded together?

The latter is an insult to the fabrication trade, and will cause headaches for years.

Concours’ advice to look at the stamping and construction and to assure yourself it is ‘professionally’ made is good.

As is the advice to NOT buy painted.

If you buy expecting a bolt on good fit, you are gonna be disappointed.

If you buy on the basis it’s gonna be a project, you might be OK.

IMHO, Commandos are not Broughs, there are tanks out there. There is an Interstate set for sale on this forum. Roadster Emgo tanks are known to be good. For me, there’s just no reason to play ‘pot luck’ buying from India.

With used Insterstate tanks fetching real money I can see why someone would be interested in another option.

As for a Roadster I don't know how they can offer these so low. I bet they painted one really nice and the rest come in like crap?

Thanks for all the advice I will go emgo

Good decision. I bought an Emgo roadster tank and I can't fault it. I did though buy an Indian tanks maybe 6 years ago and got lucky, needed no brazing, didn't leak, cap fitted correctly, and the shape is good as well . you pays your money .............. I have two Roadster tanks now and just change em round to suit me.

I’ve just bought a Roadster tank, the ones supplied by Wassell and apparently made in Taiwan. It needed the seam welding all the way round and in a couple of places along the top, there were areas on the seam that were ground back by a blind chap after 10 pints that needed building up, it leaked but other than that it’s the right shape, the bottom is pressed from one sheet and the cap fits. After the welding I spend a day grinding back and finishing the bare tank, so if you’re prepared to do the work the finished item is reasonably good. Mine is now at the painters....

This is the second one I’ve bought, I looked at the first one and it was that bad I didn’t know where to start so that went back.

You sure yours is Emgo Dave ?
No idea, it’s was definitely made in Taiwan and Wassell branded. The metal is good quality and it welded really well which is suppose I should be thankful for. Oh and it’s your fault for selling me the seat :)

The strange thing with these India tanks is the totally silly errors they make. I bought a yellow / white T160 tank on fleabay, after being reassured by the seller that it could be returned if I was not happy. Apart from the rather thin paint, complete with packaging marks, the bloody petcock holes were several inches out, ending up right over the carbs. No way in hell that it was ever going to fit without moving them, which is not a minor job :)
Other than that, the tank was quite acceptable shape wise. Well packed, (if a couple of days too soon to avoid marking the paint), neat pinstripes, but as useful as a chocolate teapot really.
No idea if it leaked of course, it was sent back the next day.

Someone went to a lot of trouble making a reasonable quality tank, but with such an elemental error.....

What kind of work do these tanks need?
Where to start.

Strange red internal linings

Petcocks in wrong place and/or wrong angle

Leaks

Thin paint

Wrong shape

dings and dents

badge holes in wrong place

Fuel filler leaking

Fuel filler cap will not fit

There was nothing wrong with the AU$271 to the door 'pressed Interstate tank I bought, the person I on sold it to seemed to think it was OK also.

Unless a t̶i̶g̶h̶t̶w̶a̶d̶ risk taker there is little point going past a EMGO Roadster tank and doubt anything from Wassell is an EMGO tank.

The pressed from 'Tooling' Interstates from India were good, several examples confirm this, but the seller looks to be no longer in the market so what's left on the market need work as they are hammered out.

I bought an Interstate painted tank from India. The paint was much better than I expected. Then I went to install on m/c and that’s where the trouble started.Did not fit.Called them back and he said it was my fault.
I would never do it again.I had the tank re-welded and altered the mounts.Too much of a crap shoot!
