Painted cases

I am aware that OldBritts recommends painting the crankcases--I assume that is how they came from the factory. Does this suggest that all non-polished aluminium parts like the gear box, the steering yokes, and the inside primary case also be painted?

I painted the first set I ever overhauled, won't do it again although they are holding up well after 5 years.

It's my understanding that only the later years were painted. There was no sign of paint on my '69 cranks, just the barrel. The fellow that powder coated my frame wanted to powder coat the cranks, barrels and head. I didn't go there although it surely could be done. Good Idea, don't know, just didn't want it to look like that. I think the AL looks just fine as long as it's not covered in oil and dirt.

IMO, skip the paint on the cases. I do it if a client insists on it, but I think the natural aluminum looks much better. I typically bead blast the exterior then douse them with pure silicone or Boeshield before they get full of finger prints.

I just worked on an engine where the owner had the cases tumbled...they turned out beautiful...think my next build will have tumbled cases.

as previously stated only later models were painted, ie 850s and possibly mk5 750, and you need to find a good paint i have heard of but never tried PJ1.

Fork yokes, yes. If you do paint the cases it must be paint that will survive gasoline. I never found any that was satisfactory.

+1 for Tumbled. The process closes pores in the casting and adds a measure of strength similar to shot peaning.

CNW offers the tumbling service for engine cases, cylinder heads and tranny cases. They come back with stunning good looks, they do not "soak"up stains and are much easier to clean.

I think NIck Nolte does it, he takes them for a spin in the dryer with him!!

(it's a radio skit for those whom don't get it)
