Can anyone shed some light on the proper silver color that was used on the rear tail fairing/lamp mount for the 1970 750 'S' and the correct green that was used on the tank and tail of the 1968 fastback. I thought I read somewhere that the green is often referred to as British Racing Green, but that it was actually something like forest green.

I am trying to get some paint codes or some colors that others have used that they know are close. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are not real picky, you can use DupliColor silver MetalSpecks for the tail lamp faring. The flake is no where as large as the original, but it is a flake. The DupliColor High Performanc wheel coating Silver also is a small flake silver, and is a bit more resistant to gas and oil. Can't refer you to the original color though, sorry. I used the MetalSpecks blue on my tank and panels, and for a spray can is not bad. You can coat it with the 2 pack clear for resistance to gas and oil, and I also understand it will paint over decals without bubbling them, but have not actually tried that.

I just picked up a silver '69 'S' taillight fairing. (I got an unbelievable deal!). The silver is in the gelcoat and is a "metalflake" finish. Are you interested in repainting a taillight fairing to match? Getting the proper size flake would be more difficult than matching the color. The color is probably faded so a spectrometer match will probably not be accurate to the original.

As for the British Racing Green, I have a NOS fastback sidecover in BRG and a used fastback tank that matches quite well (again in gelcoat). I have heard that the shade of BRG varies considerably from batch to batch.

My 1969 Fastback is green but not the British racing green, it is like the blue metal flake but a bright green colour and it is not paint but fibre glass gel coat. I thought all the fibre glass tanks were done this way but I'm sure if I am wrong some one will point out the error of my way. I'm not sure if you can see it in my avatar or not.

Bruce (69750S) in Juarez has a red 69, I think a solid color but not sure. I think the 69S red was a solid color, not flake, I'm sure someone will correct me. I'm not sure about the Fastback at all, but the parts book only lists blue and red for the 69S. I really wish someone would come up with a definite color scheme for the years and models, but I am hoping against hope. Sorry my reply doesn't address the Fastback and I know that. But I would like to see a flake green, can you get a better pic, it doesn't show up on the avatar, at least for me.

this is a bit more complex: use basecoat silver with clear coat and add flakes to the first couple of coats of clear, let dry, then wet sand and clear over that.
i think it would be close to the flake in the gel coat. i also think it would require some experimentation to get the right size flakes and have the metal flake "lay" properly.
this company sells different size/color flakes:

i plan to try it in the spring, right now my time is taken up with an alfa gtv restoration.

Here's the one I just got. It is definitely silver gelcoat, but you can get an idea of the size of the flake. Much finer than that of the tanks. This one will need repair of the cracks (only in the gelcoat), so I'll have to paint it, but you get the idea.

And the 'S' was definitely offered in red metalflake in '69. I have a friend with one he bought new in '69.

Well, according to Roy Bacon, BRG was offered on Fastbacks from '68-'71. The Emerald Fireflake on Scruff's was a 1970 only offering. I can say I have seen many BRG Fastbacks, but never an Emerald Fireflake, so I'd have to say it is rare.

But then again, Bacon says all '68 Fastbacks were green!

Regardless, I think Scruff's Emerald Fireflake bike is gorgeous!

The picture of the tail fairing that was posted looks just like mine. Mine has a few more cracks that that. My paint guy is going to use a prophet camera on the paint to get it in the ballpark and then tint the color until he gets a good match for both color and flake. The flake at the tail fairing is much small than the flake that was used on the tanks and covers.

You are right on the year as it is date stamped on the plate as 12/69 which would make it a 1970 model and it had the chrome headlight ears and front mudguard stays. The photos do not do the colour justice or the metal flake but it is close on the tail. I did not touch the tank or tail as it did not look to bad for its age, the transfers are worn a bit but I think it looked ok for its age so the tank and tail are the only parts I did not touch.
