P11, P11A, 750 Ranger Engine thread

I went back and looked at my OEM pair of Amals 930/7 and 930/8 and find I did not recognize the change in components around needles, needle jets, jet holder....possibly other changes.

So when I naively ordered new 930...and was directed to 930/300 and 930/301 ....and asked for 107, 250 just like OEM, little did I know that this was not going to work as the Amal 930 atomization components had radically changed. I am disappointed in the ease of finding this disjointed Amal information.
I find, even now, the forum conversation around this Amal 7/8 issue maddening.

I even looked into determining what the appropriate ring count was on the different Premier Amal pilot jets and don't find reference, not that I can use the info on this P11, but something for me to complain about.

All of the vintage charts/tables on Amal components are "useless".
At least for the era of P11 or 7/8 Amals!
Why is no one selling Amal carbs or parts stating this ?
Or did I miss something?

I will have to go out and change my "over thought" 220 mains to 200. WTF

After a lot of testing I arrived at the following set-up:
200 main jet
106 needle jet, top notch
#3 slide
The standard setting was always too rich.
This is with high pipes and Armours silencers. K&N Filter E3402 in the standard housing. E5 fuel.
At least one P11 owner from this list has nearly the same set-up. He had the needle in the middle position.
I have now installed premiers with the same setting and a 119 pilot air screw.
Have done about 2000 miles now and the P11 runs very well without signs of overheating.
Hope this helps
Peter

What needle are you running please?

I pulled the 1967 Norton P11 Amal 930/7 pilot screw out and compared to the new 930/300 screw to see if there was a difference.

P11, P11A, 750 Ranger Engine thread

928/063 vs 622/124, needle jet holder length, add needle jet orfices, pilot circuit revisions, pilot screw revisions, float revisions, float needle add tip, revise tickle mechanism, main jet down size required, bushing to replace pilot jet, etc.

Quite a few changes....at what year and what model 4 stroke bikes used early version now called 2 stroke Amal.

did only the P11 use a 2 stroke Amal?

@p400

Am I correct in reading this, that newly made Amal jet size numbers DO NOT correspond to the originals?
If this is correct, then your statement "All of the vintage charts/tables on Amal components are "useless" is utterly correct unless a crossover table exists somewhere.

The size number of the originals was equal to the ml of fuel that would flow under certain bench conditions. What does the size number of the newly made correspond to?

My frustration is about the revision of 930/7&8 Amal from OEM (now two stroke configuration) to the 1969 updated four stroke configuration.
This affects needle, needle jet, main jet, pilot jet, float, float level, possibly more.
BE AWARE

Hi.
I have overhaulled my P11 stock 7/8 Amal and they work great.
Parts bought from Andover:
New cut 3 hard zinched sliders;
New 4T throttle needles and clips;
New white floats (setted 2mm under the top);
New bowl gaskets;
New vitons;
New 25 air pilots;
New 220 main jets (not 250);
New long jets holder;
New 106 (not 107) with two holes;
New air screw with new oring.
The same setting that i use (without 25 air pilot) for all my Commando with 930 30/31, 46/47, 68/69 carbs (and for 26/27 with 25 air pilot).
N15 7/8 carbs use cut 2 sliders (tmuch rich) and rides better with cut 3.

All this is very useful info, but at the end of the day you'll still be using seat of the pants feel and plug readings to get a final setting your satisfied with.

Took my P11 to lunch 35 miles out, 30 back (faster route).
Here are my plugs. They look a little rich to me, so mains (220) are now 200 for next test.
Fresh plugs BP8ES......maybe I need hotter plugs?

Put 70 miles on today with 200 mains.

The right cylinder remains a dark burn.

80 miles today, only changed pilot screw on dark plug side. 3/4 to 1 I/8 turns out. not as smooth running , but okay.

What is the length or distance an Amal needle is changed by one groove change?
I have measured this, but would like to know the official measurement.
I am planning to use a needle shim to avoid a major change.
my shims are .015 and .032"
