Thanks for replies, you may have guessed by my user name Nortons are a whole new world to me. Thanks Knut, am in U.K. but gives me some excellent pictures. Richard

Complete gearboxes are rarely seen for sale in the UK, but turn up from time to time in the US. Prepare yourself for a hefty shipping bill!
Maybe an importer of old bikes can help you reduce the shipping bill?
Why not buy the shells I linked to, and obtain a pre-owned gear cluster for a Commando? Then, swap the mainshaft, and Bob's your uncle :)

Knut, I think you are right. Is the Commando gear cluster as easy as you say or are there any hidden little nasties. Is it just the case of transferring the cluster and selectors and getting a new mainshaft. Thanks Richard

I've got a complete P11 gearbox that actually works. However, a new Commando gearbox would be cheaper than what I would sell it for. :)

I want to say yes the Commando cluster and shift forks (selectors) would go right in, but you would want the shorter P11 mainshaft to make alignment of the primary chain work well. I have not done it with all the parts, but the few I have replaced where the same parts a Commando gearbox of the correct vintage uses. If I wanted to be sure, regardless of who on this site told me it would work, I would use the AN site to check part numbers between a Commando and the pre-Commando P11 for the parts I planned to swap out.

You might be well advised to buy a new mainshaft as the used ones have probably seen some abuse and they do bend. If straightened, you run the risk of future breakage. Don't ask how I know. It was very embarrassing.

Short answer is yes. A gear cluster off a 750 Commando (69-72) is a safer bet than clusters off an 850 due to some changes to gearing, and the torque involved. Examine carefully gear teeth for pitting wear, gear wheel dogs for grinding wear, shifter forks for wear and straightness, and beware of fake gear parts (RS marking). As always, it pays to do your homework. Good luck!
