Does anyone out there in the world have a commando with original ss pipes and brackets. I plan on having viking ss pipes made for my second 850 this winter and would like to have something like the original brackets made up for them since they are not available. What would be ideal would be pictures of the actual original brackets, how they attach and measurements. If not all of that pictures of the original mounting points may give me what I need, thanks in advance.

Old Britts shows the brackets as available. Have a look around there. Are you wanting upswept pipes with peashooters, or Interstate style that are parallel to the road? They also have photos and a tech article about the different fits. Look at group 23 under the 1974 parts.

I think what Tim actually intends to do is to fit a 750SS high level exhaust system onto an 850, so he needs the exhaust bracket detail for a 750SS?

Re: original ss pipes and brackets

L.A.B. you are correct. Paul Bryant has let me know he will do the headers for the 850. I would like to use a dunstall type silencer and realize the norton brackets may not work, but the pictures of the ones old britts shows on their website actually fixed to a bike are not the original type and are rather obtrusive in my opinion. I was not aware andover had the original type. Maybe I can get dimensions from them unless someone here has a bike to take close up pics of?

My suggestion would be to get the brackets and send them to Paul Bryant. They can then fit the headers and silencers to the brackets. Done.

A friend of mine made a few sets of 'SS' mounts a year or so ago. I can check if he has any left.

These were the prototypes he made off the set on his original '71 SS and it's obvious the rattle can paint on these leave something to be desired.

The black brackets on the left fit on the seat/top shock stud and with rubber mounts to the diamond shape plate. The brackets on the right fit between the diamond plate and the passenger footpeg bolt.

Old Britts also makes a set of brackets for the mufflers, but to my eye they are kind of ugly. Also if you look at Fred's set-up he is using the 'S' style muffler and heat shields, where the 'SS' uses standard pea shooters and fiberglass heat shields that bolt to the muffler clamp and had a 'glassed in bracket to reach around the muffler and bolt to the muffler mount. If you are using any other type of muffler, these heatshields won't fit. In fact, you often have to modify the bracket as the taper on peashooters varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Ron, go ahead and ask if he has an extra set laying around and let me know. You can email or pm me if you like and thanks, Tim

I bought mine together with the pipes at Viking earlier this year. Should have a picture of them on my 850 very soon.

Forget what I wrote above. Look at the picture LAB posted and you can see the atraight bracket goes from shock stud down to the diamond plate and the angled one from the diamond plate to the Z-plate.

I'll check with my friend when I see him tomorrow.

The diamond shaped 061721 brackets are just normal peashooter brackets.
