I'm currently restoring a '75 MKIII. The rear wheel rim, like so many others, has been damaged by battery acid over the the years. Therefore, I'm considering getting it rechromed. Since I'm doing this, I'm also considering getting the spokes replated. Any ideas of what the plating on the original spokes was? I'm thinking it was a dullish grey (cad?) from photos I've seen. I don't want to overrestore the bike by installing spokes that are too bright and shiny, pretty though they are.

The spokes were always referred to as 'rustless' which of course they weren't as they oxidised and the oxidation came off with the first go at cleaning them. I'd suspect that it was cadmium rather than zinc.

If you don't have a friend who works nights in an aircraft component factory, the chances of finding a source of cadmium plating (in the EU at least) at a reasonable price are zero. If you find stainless spokes too shiny, you could have them blasted first.

Chrome drives Hydrogen into metal matrix making it brittle, especially in thin steel stuff. Requires long heat cook off soon as possible after chrome laid on. Search up chrome spokes breaking or brittle to see scope of it to be aware of.

Hit and miss on re- chrome of old rims, by finish and also thin steel issue above possible. But its been done with fine results so hope yours works as well. You might be surprised on what ya find if you just go down the long list of vendors around the world. Get to meet neat folks as well as good deals.
Its so delicious to see everything finer finished than factory issue.
