I just purchased some new oil lines for my '74 850 - from a local classic bike spares seller.

The lines supplied say "Fuel Hose" and are rated from 30 to 100degC, outer hose is nitrile and inner hose is neoprene.

Is this suitable and will it handle the temp of the hot oil from the motor,

Thanks Don

I think I would rather see a upper rating of 130c.

Fuel line doesn't have as much internal strength as oil cooler hose. I got a bad kink that shut my oil return off when using fuel line.

I have a friend who thought I was being silly when I told him that fuel line was a bad idea for his oil lines.

When coming back from a long ride on a hot day, he quit thinking that as his wife screamed at him for leaving a line of oil on their driveway. Fortunately the return hose split just as he got home rather than at speed on the highway. He was very lucky!

Unless the hose SPECIFICALLY STATES it's usable for gasoline and oil, don't use it for both. Most fuel hose I have seen says "oil resistant," which basically means it's OK if oil occasionally gets on it, but not for oil running through it full time.

I would not hesitate to use ethanol compatible fuel injection hose; the stuff is rated to 225 PSI; it can take the heat too, although 3/8 is not as common as 5/16 and 1/4

Not the same, at all, as old time pre-ethanol 12 PSI automobile carburetor fuel hose.

It's not a pressure issue, it's a temperature issue. I have spoken with the tech support of several companies and each told me not to use their fuel line for hot oil. If the temperature rating is high enough on the hose you use, then there should be no issue. Also, the OD of most high-pressure fuel or oil hose is much larger than the original hoses and that makes them difficult to use on a Norton. Exactly what hose do you use?

There's a couple of links, high temp and high pressure. Modern fuel injection hose is often routed within radiant range of exhaust headers.

Yes, OD can be an issue. I've used generic viton lined fuel injection hose; same OD.

The next step, if you want to go to 1/2 inch or 5/8 for low resistance/high flow/less pressure loss is hydraulic hose, aka power steering hose.

The best way for a tech rep to lose his job is to say "Yeah, you can get away with whatever 'off book' use you want to put our product to." For me, if it meets or exceeds psi, temp, and chemical resistance, then . . .

Hi guys,

Thanks for the multiple replies. I have obviously decided not to use the fuel hose that was supplied to me as a genuine part, but just came off a roll of hose he had in his workshop.

I have now ordered a couple of metres of gates transmission oil cooler hose rated at 225psi and 150degC. It should be arriving in a couple of days. Bought on line from an automotive shop here in Oz.

Cheers Don

I'm amazed that the oil in Commando engines reaches those kinds of temperatures (I'm not doubting your words on it though - I'm just amazed). Is this something particular to Commandos, or will Triumph twins get their oil similarly hot? And if it is just Commandos, what is it about them that causes such great heat in the oil?

Temps typically don’t get that high. Maybe 220 F at the tank. Oil tank dry sump systems run cool compared to wet sump. It takes maybe an hour to really get our oil hot. Yes, oil coming out of the engine, I dunno, might reach 300 F.
