oil tank replacement

Hello again,

Since I got my commando two years ago I have been thinking about replacing the oil tank. I really dislike the side covers and think that a Manx style oil tank with a battery box would look really good. But I have second thoughts as all the mounting brackets combined with the battery box seem to be quite heavy duty. Does the original construction have any structural significance? I wouldn't have thought so., but...?

Has anyone done this, and would you share experience/photos? What other "customizations" are out there?

Thanks!

You're not alone as I have thought about this also. I like space, or the look of open space within the frame of the bike.

I am interested in suggestions for future reference. A nice polished, alloy oil tank with battery box, without side panels would look nice on a Commando I think.

I know Manx style tanks have the filler spout on the top of the tank so depending upon which seat style you have one might have to use a Manx style seat with a cut out for the filler spout. Unless there is something available with the spout coming off the side of the tank so one could use a stock or any seat with the Commando.

No, I would not think so either, certainly not the oil tank, as that is normally rubber mounted, and I doubt the battery tray does anything to stiffen the frame really, although I would be interested to hear if anyone has a different opinion about that.

RGM do a nice alloy oil tank, a photo of it might be on their site.

I think I saw a pic of those. I'm curious if one has to move to a Manx seat that has the cutaway on top for the tank filling receptacle?

The early roadster and S-type bikes had a central oil tank that should allow some flexibility on the use of different side covers or perhaps even none at all.
