I recently got my 72 750 together, engine internals done with JS parts all good ,and the engine runs really strong...no noise ( oil pressure gauge from old britts ).. 50psi cold all sounds good too.....my concern...the return to the oil tank seems "weak" as I never get a steady stream of oil back into the oil tank....at least not as "strong" as my 71 750 ? How crazy do i make myself over this ? Point of intrest ....this engine wet sumps after 3 weeks I can get 1qt of oil out of the crank case.I would appreciate some feed back and or perspective

You do not see a steady stream of return oil because the scavenge part of the oil pump has a larger capacity than the supply side.
So the return flow is oil mixed with air.

If by wet sump after 3 weeks the tank is low enough so the gauze filter is visible then the pump needs a refresh to close up the clearances. But air in the return is not an issue after the sump level has stabilised.

Start here on the wetsumping:

At least you didn't follow the parts book for the 72 and switch up the oil lines.

I have a steady, steady stream of oil back to the tank. Any chance you can get a video of the oil return? Ideally with video of your 71 too for comparison?

Dependant on where your gauge is fitted and how the machine runs I would assume that’s a better indicator than a visual which is not an accurate gauge.
Mine splutters, never had a concern. Run 250 miles in a day, it’s not seized, doesn’t get hot assumed it’s was normal.

MK III here. It takes a month plus for any serious wet sumping to occur but over winter it will eventually empty the tank. The only time I see a steady return is after a few weeks when the sump has started to fill. Since fitting a gauge I don't even look anymore. As has been stated the scavenge pump is bigger, turns with the pressure, so if it's got pressure, there's no big puddle, I'm good to go.

Thanks I’ll leave well enough alone, trust the gauge and trust the build

zefer I like your avatar. Reminds me when I ride my Norton past a fresh cut field or a field full of clover in full bloom. A ride past a wood burning bon fire etc. ;) a family having a BBQ...so many smells. It's the little things that add to your travel.
cheers,
T

And some things you definitely don't want to smell, like being stuck behind a HGV carrying waste meat not fit for hunman consumption. . . . . .

Or passing a Pig farm. whooo wee
Blue Ridge Mountain in NC on a weekend. Just smell those brakes smoking going down those hills....like a clutch that has just had too much and isn't going to put out no more. Sorry I went on the southbound train again with this thread. I apologize.

Thanks to everyone who helped
Now if I could get someone to get me a step by step “cheat sheet”on how to post photos I’d be glad to post lots of Images of the build
I have a lot of trouble with understanding anything PC related
ADD gets the best of me....this bike is soooo sharp and we’ll sorted
I would love to share the photos

Here's how I post photos. Other photo hosting sites are similar. The other easier option is to become a member here.

I use Post Image: https://postimages.org/ Its free and doesn't screw you over like photo-bucket.
1. open an account with them. Your email or User name. A Password.
2. download your pictures to your computer.
3. Log in to post image site and log on. Upper right hand corner. Once you see your user name up top.
4. you must choose a maximum size of 1024X768 size (I think). I believe thats the max or your image gets chopped. But Check with L.A.B.
5. click on "choose image"
Photo Image will search for it on your computer. Lets say your have it on your desktop in a folder you created lets just say "road trip"
6. Photo image will go to that folder. Pick your pictures how you want it shown on your thread.
6.5 click on the images and click upload.
7. Start a thread on here Access Norton...like "Road Trip"
8. write down something like "my trip to deals gap"
9. Go back to photo image and click on the image that matches what you want to show.
10. click share. you will see a bunch of options presented. Click Hot links to forums.
11. wait until you see "copied"
12. go back to Access Norton thread that you started. Click paste.
the image or images should stick to the forum. Make sure you don't have an expiry date.
Here's an image:

Cheers,
Tom
