Decided to tear into the oil pump today and found the gears looked a bit pitted and well not a pristine as I would have hoped. The bike develops OK oil pressure, but its on the low side - can't remember the pressure vs rpms but I know it's not great. Thus the maintenance. I'm not sure you can tell by these pics, but what do you all think?
Oil Pump Gears

It's hard for me to tell by the pic, but I can tell you what I did. Now that you have the pump apart, notice that there are radius's on the inside of the gears, they go to the inside of the pump. I put the gears in the pump, and used 600 w/d paper to smooth them out on a glass plate, I used a piece of Corian. Do both sides. Do the cover, same way. I went to far and when I put the gearbox back together, it was real tight. I put some rubbing compound on the faces, and turned it over with an electric drill until they smoothed out a bit and were not tight. Took it all apart, and washed them out very good with Varsol, and carb cleaner until I couldn't get any more junk out of them. Put it all back together and it seems real tight, but smooth, with no side play. So far I haven't had any problem with sumping, but then the bike has only had 50W Havoline Racing oil in it so far and no sumping for about 4 days. The 50W is about like honey, but it goes through the pump and returns fine.

I stand to be corrected as usual.

As with the condition of the gears, the internal surface of the pump body is also critical. If it is clear of marring (gouges, scratches) you stand a chance to revive it. This is the sealing point of the pumpand is were pressure is build. If the gears or the body are not up to snuf, resurfacing the other componants will help only slighty.
I took a gamble on Ebay and got an old pump out of an Atlas basket case. All surface were head over heels better then the one off the bike.
Even though this was an old pump with the clearance angle cut by the lower mount bolt, I found that all mounting and internal dimentions to be identical. After a little conditioning, as Dogt mentioned, the pump operated like brand new. The side benefit was a 90% reduction in losing oil from the tank after sitting.
