After cleaning out oil tank, replacing filters etc (mk3) I'm getting plenty oil return to tank. I always check feed to rockers but not happening ? Timing cover off ?? Thanks, Roy. Ps all pipes clear .

Just a note
The MK3 doesn't have a conical washer
It has a flat one

What be the signs of this leaking? I renewed the points cover seal due to oil ingress several? years ago and the engine has only been shed run since. I'm looking for a reason why oil is not supplying the rockers. I certainly don't remember renewing that washer! Important mistake ?? Roy.

I have seen a norton run without that pump washer seal motor had 15 psi max, might have been less , at the lower banjo port ! , probably only survived because of crank design and pump squirting up that passage , that motor has at least 80 on start up and runs 54 or so now .

Cover off, check oil pump seal is still there, then renew it. According to the service notes some engines were assembled without the conical seal but still ran ok, the whirling action of the crank sucked the oil into it, so supplying the big ends. No oil pressure to the rockers though.

Sorry about photos . I intended attaching one to last post! Will take off timing cover tomorrow to check. The grass can wait, again !!

Here goes . Detach the rocker feed at the head . Run the bike . Observe for messy oil exiting the pipe . Have rags handy . Don't worry , you won't damage anything for this messy test .

Took the timing cover off. No rubber washer/ seal ! A very important small part it seems. I had no idea of its existence and must have lost the original when renewing the timing/ points seal ! Yet again, great advice from forum and why we all are on it. Thanks yet again, Roy.

Blimey 😳
Good save
So you're anti wet sump valve can't have worked either, not without the seal fitted
Be sure to fit the flat type as shown in your picture

I believe Swooshdave ventilated his bikes crankcase at highway speed and lived to tells us he discovered the reason was oil seal had dropped out when installing TC.

A new seal should be a nice tight fit on the spigot. I fit it onto the spigot dry so that it grips nicely. I then grease the front face of the seal, plus the inner receiving part of the timing cover, so that it ‘squishes’ and seats nicely.

Not saying it’s right, just what I does.

I'm surprised it took me till now to find out about something so important ! A design that could/ should have been redesigned methinks. However if I wanted to sit idlely in the shed all day I'd get a Honda or equivalent!! With a mk3 there's always something to try and make function correctly !! Keeps me busy , Roy.

Why redesign it?

It wouldn't hurt to rig an oil gauge to check your oil pressure , just to verify its all good .cheers
