The mk3 valve is prone to stick but when they do stick, they stick open and the bike will wet sump just like the valve was not there.

Yep - i have a Mk III timing cover on my non Mk III and any time the cover has been off the valve has been stuck open.

Did the valve help at all before it stuck?

Mine does, It can go for weeks and not having much of a difference in the level of the tank.

Fortunately you don't. I turned one out of a stock industrial valve and used it for 3 years in combination with a disclock-reminder-wire (one end on my trottle grip and the other end on the kickstarter) to be sure NOT to forget to open the manual valve. The inevitable happened, don't ask me about the circumstances but I did forget to open the valve finally. I rode for 4 miles only to find out there was zero pressure on my gauge  Immediately I opened the valve and was extremely lucky no harm was done inside my engine. From that moment I fitted an automatic anti drain valve and got rid of the manual one :!:

The proverbial "oh, shit" moment.

If I was 1000% sure I would never forget the valve it might be an option. As I can't remember so many things there is no way.

I believe it is very effective when working.
I only relatively recently discovered that it was a Mk III timing cover, and prior to that had for some time wondered what all the fuss was about wet sumping. It seems that in in the last year or few when I have spent less time riding the Commando that the valve sticking seems to be more of an issue.

OK, here is the direction I am going. If I were Jim Comstock, I would probably make myself a custom oil pump, but I am not so I reconditioned the existing one. Then I hunted around and found this valve.

Oil Pump and Wetsumping

The valve is a Circle Seal 9500 series 1/4-inch valve in 316 stainless steel with viton seal. It is rated for 2000 PSI for industrial applications. These are a really nice valve, but they are not cheap, I haven't found a good source for them as yet, but a patient search on Ebay might find one. The valve is 1/4 pipe thread but the actual opening was 3/16-inch so I overbored it to 5/16-inch since I don't care if I destroy the pressure rating.

Here is what it looks like taken apart, after the boring. Yes, it is that easy to rebuild.

So, now here is the mocked-up and sure to be mocked location on the bike. Yes, I just used electrical tape to attach it to the hose for the photo. Yes, that is a ball point pen to simulate an extension on the valve handle. This is what it would look like in the open position.

This is what it would look like in the closed position.

Note that the extension on the handle would prevent you from comfortably using your foot peg, and make it nearly impossible to kick start the bike. I am looking around in my pile of debris for some SS tube, or aluminum pipe that would make a suitable extension. I am not sure how the finished product will look yet.

Did you get any further with this project?
