I ordered an oil pump for my Combat engine and got a Mk III pump (06-6193) after installing the pump I cannot fit the timing cover, but it almost fits; when I remove the oil pump seal (to the timing cover) the timing cover fits tight.

There are at least two different seals (the part numbers are different for the Combat and the Mk III). Is there a simple solution to buttoning up my engine or do I need a different pump or timing cover?

Do you have your old pump. The part that the seal goes on on the pump is removable and can be swapped with the new one. Depending in the condition of your old seal, you can use it too, but if i don't say that a fresh one is advisable, someone will be sure to interject.

Pump 06-6193 is suitable for 1972-on.

So, which seal are you using? You need the 067510 tapered seal for a pre-Mk3 cover.

Are there any shims behind the pump spigot?

I solved this problem, Thank you pvisseriii and LAB.

I suspected that the answer was in the seal and I assumed that the seal I received was speced for a Mk III TS cover. I removed the seal from the oil pump and attempted to fit it into the timing cover; there I discovered that the bore of the cover was too small to accomodate the seal once it was expanded by the barb on the oil pump, and, further, that the TS cover screws would likely strip out before they sealed the timing chest.

To fix this I fit the seal to a piece of dril stock then fit the drill stock into my cordless drill and introduced the spinning seal to my spinning grinder gently and in stages until the seal fit snug in the cover and the central opening in the seal would fit over the oil pump. The cover screws pulled the cover up against the TS case and were far from stripping their threads.

In a perfect world I would have ordered a new seal for a pre-Mk III; the one I made will work.

I like your bench grinder machinist solution. The oil pump gasket-seal must be a matched set. There is a 750 and 850 version of the sets with different gasket and seal thickness. Old Brits may have a article on this and I know Waldrige sells them in matched up part number sets. If your bodge still looks good at later inspection, ya won. But even the proper fit ones tend to get chewed up so worth having a few on hand, like so many other items.
