I have an updated Oil filter ~ which was 'created ' for me by a diesel mechanic and his tech head mate in Melbourne Australia~ ( Lost touch with them several years back ~ May email anyway )

As a result I have a Fleetway filter LF 3460 .

Now I have seen a similiar adaptor on EBay ~ cannot recall who the trader was.. but I am sure they are on my Web site lists ~ but short of panning through dozens of sites ~

Has any one else bought their oil filter into the 21st Century ??

Do you know the actual thread dimensions required ~

( I promised Graeme , building a MKIII ~ and offered a few suggestions includig this ~ )

I understand there's an adapter to modify the stock thread to a more common size (I think it changes from 16mm to 3/4"), but I have no problem finding the stock filter.

Its the same as just about every Ducati made since the '70s. I generally get the K & N 153, which has a nut welded on the end - makes removal a snap.

I use the K & N 204 on the Triumph. Another feature of these filters is the nut is drilled for safety wiring - not necessary on the Norton with its band clamp, but a nice feature for other bikes. (I drilled the oil drain plug on the Triumph, and wired the filter to the drain, locking both in place)

I've used both the Baldwin 474 and the K&N 153. Either works fine. You should also be able to cross reference from those and find others. Avoid Fram!

Thanks Blokes ~ combined you nailed it squarely ~ that will get Graeme home and hosed ~ I reckon ~ as he is watching this thread as well ! Cheers ~

But in short I feel the original filters ~ which I realise are available ~ are in our assessment lacking compared to the Fleetwood or similar ~ 8) 8)

Over here Fram has a reputation of being built to a price and not as good quality as some other makers. Check out bobistheoilguy.

Seems to me that even brand names are built quite often to a gradient of level/ standards ~ or even 'seconds' ~ and these lesser of these names can be seen in stores such as K Mart ~ and I am a little dubious about buying as said even brand names therein ~ IMO ~

I noticed the fram filter for my bike is made in the EU, and I have never been able to find them with the rest of the ''cheap'' fram filters at K Mart style stores. They sure hate them on that bobistheoilguy ,but with very little proof. Fittng Simcas & Shittins {citreons} they may have been sourced from France.

If Fram just relabels them it should make a difference. Next time you change your oil just cut one open and see what it looks like. My theory is almost any filter is better then the screen I have in my bike that Nortons ran with for many years.
When I used a Commando for transportation that bike was fitted with an adapter I cut down from an old Pontiac engine I had in the garage. I used the smallest filter that fit the mount but it was still twice the size of a stock one when they came out.
The stock oil pump moved the oil quite well though the frame, my large tank, and the filter.
This experience makes me think you could adapt one from another make if you wished.

Funny that I have used them for years and never had a problem, I think if you really want to help your engine you would want to add one of those filter magnets they sell that wraps around the filter body. A buddy swears by them and says most of the wear in motors are caused by microscopic metal dust filters will never stop. I have thought of using one but kinda think it's voodo type mechanics, But you might want to check it out for yourself and comment. Who knows? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Oil-Mag- ... tsupported http://www.magnom.com/index.php/info/product/mini/

A guy on another forum uses these magnets for two reasons -
To trap fine ferrous particles in the filter
To trigger the traffic sensor at automatic traffic lights. Bikes are often too small of a field to trigger the sensor loop in the pavement.

Would someone please clarify for me.

I removed the oil filter from my Combat. It was stiff to get off but came off. I offered up the new one (from RGM) which has an M16 x 1.5 thread but it didn't seem to want to screw on. The one I took off was a just a normal 'modern' filter, no adapter so I assume the thread was changed at some point.

Seems to me that the guy that put the filter under the trans hated people worldwide and me in particular. I hope he's gotten over it, or is in hell with the rest of the devils that have dreamed up ways to make my life more difficult than necessary. I moved it to under the seat. I swapped the stock battery for a 7 amphr RGT from Yuasa. Now there's all sorts of room under there.

Certionly seems like it has been changed but I guess by comparing the two it should be obvious .. but then the thread on the new one could be a dud~ if you can see to the filter base.. you may be able to see if there is a threaded insertion over the top of the original ~ OR it may have unscrewed into the filter ~ unlikely if the new one does not screw up or fit ~

Of course as you ask.. maybe soem oen has changed it... I would run with the later filter ~ keep it simple eh !!

( I have a similar issue when I fitted the new zorts to the Trident recently ~ the roses and the bolts were all new but ~ shorter story ~ I had to retap them !)

I used thread loc on mine so it would not unscrew with the filter ~

bpatten ~ I like your conversion !! Thats great.. and I like your sentiments regarding ~ what some did in the factory ~ just make it work ~

Look Bling in three cylinders ` ( Hope Jerry does not evict me for a shot of my current project ~ but hey it is Brit after all~ 8) THaaannnks Jerry ~ )

The thread has always been M16 x 1.5 as far as I know? And the part numbers of the housing (063139) and filter (063371) didn't change over the period between '72 when they were fist fitted, and the end of Commando production.

If you are trying to put an original-spec filter on and its not working, I think it would be one of three things:

The filter mount may not be standard Norton. It could be from an aftermarket manufacturer who made it to fit a more common filter thread.

The filter mount may have an adapter thread on it, again, to fit a more commonly available filter.

The filter may have been mis-labeled (not common, but has happened to me)

I got fed up with leaking hassle of my oil filter.

Ten years ago I removed the oil filter and all its piping stuff.

I drilled a small hole in my oil tank dipstick and wired a strong magnet to it, this catches any metal bits.

I change oil every 1500 miles, maybe once a year with all synthetic mobil 15-50.

I just don't feel it is "necessary" to have an oil filter with my magnet and frequent oil changes, it was a real
relief to get rid of the filter and its piping, possible leaking junctions, etc ,etc
