In view of my post regarding later oil filters ~ I had an intriguing extension of the subject on the new Classic-motorbikes.net site ~

3 X 1971 750's, no filter other than the oil tank metal one, 1 850 1973 still no filtyer other than in the loi tank, and the 1974 850 frame has a T110 engine being fitted, which if all goes well will have a Morgo barrel fitted before it finished.

They have never been fitted to the models in 71 only after market kits , never felt the need, just change loi regular, and don't really have any problems with it. work on the prince that if it ain't broke why fix it.

Curious as to how many chose to run with the essential oil tank gauze only ~ and torts ~

I'm running with the gauze filter only. There is not a lot of room in a featherbed frame to add a filter and I reckon with the few miles a year I put on this bike it won't make a lot of difference. It would be a different story if I used it for distance or daily transport.

Detergent oils need a filter non-detergent oils don't they use the sludge trap. I pretty sure that's how it is.

And gravity?

As non-detergent oils do not hold particles in suspension, so they tend to settle out in the oil tank and sump as sludge?

If I should make it long enough to have to tear this engine down I'll find out how the sludge trap looks with synthetic oil.
