odometer reset mechanism wore out

My 1975 MK 3 Smith odometer and speedometer still works
but the trip reset shaft will no longer engage the gears

Sending off a for rebuild would likely be more costly then it is worth to me
Has anyone come across a solution or fix I can try

Unscrew cable from speedo.
Pull reset stem out of speedo body.
Reinsert reset stem into speedo body being sure it clicks into place.
Test.
Reinstall cable to speedo.

I had the same symptom and it worked for me.

I don't think Nisonger will warrant their work unless they do a complete rebuild at full price.
They don't know what's wrong until they take the whole thing apart. They're expensive ($190),
but their work is 1st class unlike a number of speedo restoration people around. Beware
of the guy who advertises on eBay. The alternative is to forget about the trip meter or to
buy one of the new fangled digital electronic speedos Smiths is making now and which go for
$350 or so.

Not quite the same issue, but I had my Atlas speedo rebuilt by a guy named Joel Levine located outside of Atlanta. It was about a year ago, but he did a great job, turn around was quick, and I think it was around $250.00. Wouldn't hesitate to send him the gauges off of either bike if necessary.

I have tried to reinstall the shaft with no luck
I will likely either have to send it a re builder or look for a speedo that can be parted out
I was wondering if anyone has taken it apart to see what part of the rest mechanisms fail as well
