Odd Oil Tank Mount

I have the Interstate up on the lift to sort out the battery mount and wiring. I went to the other side of the bike and noticed a lot of movement in the oil tank. The front mount was loose. So I take things apart and this is what I find for the front tank mount. It's a solid bolt with a rubber thing.

Now here the bad part, I probably can't blame the previous owner because I probably did it so long ago that I don't even remember it. One of those challenges when you've been around the bike for 25-30 years.

:p

I need to look to see if I have proper oil tank mounts. I just replaced them on the other bike. I had tried the old trick of using the stiffer top isolastic/muffler mounts for the oil take and got a broken tab for my troubles.

For now I added an extra washer and put things back.

Make sure the face of the tank tabs are parallel to the frame gusset. Bend the tab parallel if it isnt before you tighten the oil tank isos. Mine have lasted a good while after doing this.

tighten the bottom mount first, and with the upper aft mount perfectly aligned, tighten up the upper aft iso. the forward upper mount can be adjusted to put less stress on the bracket when tightening the remaining mount. I found an (oil tank) iso mount replacement (H-D part number, 62563-65) worked best on the upper forward bracket - OE Norton hardware on the bottom and upper aft mount. with everything tight, it doesn't appear that I have any stress or tension on any of the oil tank mounts. ideally I'm thinking you would want the oil tank, isolated, floating, and a snug fit with no stress on any of the upper mounts.

On my 750 I omitted the bottom mount and the rear tab broke. I was securing the oil tank with Velcro in addition to the front and rear mounts.

When addressing the 750 I added a pad to the bottom of the tank and went back to the softer stock mounts.

Time will tell.
