Has any one had occasion to make their own O-rings from cord stock? If so what type of adhesive did you find best? I will be making some O-rings from either high temp silicone or Viton or both and would like to get some advice from those with experience.

Thanks,
Ed

years ago I had an o ring making kit in my garage. It included various o ring sizes and a device you used to cut the o ring square. The glue was a kind of supoer glue [ before the name superglue was coined ] The trick was lining the 2 o irng ends up so thay met correctly otherwise you stuffed the o ring.

PS there was no substitute for the correct o ring. the only success we had was making o rings for the older power steering pumps, and then we always fitted the join at the top.

We make the o-rings all the time for our helium mass spectrometer leak test cabinet . We buy the o ring material on a roll and use a Cyanoacrylate Adhesive (super glue) to make the joint. McMaster Carr sells the o ring cord and the splicing kits. The cabinet has a groove in the chamber face which makes it easier and without a groove it might be difficult to make one.

Superglue is the answer, but only for static applications on buna-n or viton. Nothing works for silicone o-rings. Jim

I remember having to water proof the joint with what looked like rubber glue to prevent breakdown of the super glue.

Silicone joins OK with Loctite 770 primer and Loctite 406 adhesive. Not brilliant with water or temps above 80 C.

Thank you all for the info. I think I will go with Viton and super glue. This is to replace O-ring gasket on a the points cover of a K2F magneto. So, the temp and environmental limitations should be satisfied.

Cutting the ends square and lining up is the tricky part. We have 28 meter bed deep hole boring machines at work that seal on made up orings which are changed according to size being bored. The simple little tool that cuts end square is well worth it cos 800 litres of oil flow a minute at 200 psi makes a big mess if you get it wrong don't ask me how i know this
