I'm considering sourcing Norvil bodywork for my '72 Commando. In my jurisdiction [Vancouver] I'm able to take advantage of considerably reduced insurance premiums by insuring my bikes under "classic collector" status, but the bikes must follow closely as possible cosmetic availability when it was made new, or use only cosmetic modifications available before or during the time it was built. I've been told that 'production racer' bodywork could be bought through Norton dealers, but there's never been any confirmation of any other color than the yellow almost unversally seen. I'm thinking of a navy blue, but must be carefull about voiding insurance.
Any thoughts on the colors seen through the years on this body work option?

Some of the pieces are getting difficult to obtain. Apparently the tail light fairing is no longer available.

Was a attleship Grey one in N.Z. :?

I have an original 3 1/2 gallon tank in white - weighs an absolute ton!

Can we ask how we know its 'original' ?

PR replica stuff must have been some of the most widely copied 'glass on the planet.
There are 3 suppliers I can still choose from in this neck of the woods.
Possibly more...

colourscheme applied by & at the Factory Race Shop , where the P. R.s were made .

Is there any suggestion though that you could order a full race proper JPN Norton - that was for sale ??????

Possibly a slightly rash statement, but it dates from the early '70s, and uses the same fittings as the Original fibreglass tanks (petrol tap bosses, rear bobbins, filler neck/cap)
I've made worse asumptions

Can't get a photo of the tank, as it's down at the fabricators, but this came with it (with some other 'period' bits). Not absolute proof, but good enough for me to spout off with, and I'm not in court

Hi

I have a black bodywork kitted one.
I think the colours are still listed in the catalogue.
I will have a look,

Chris

Insurance must be really expensive in Canada, if this is cheaper than just paying the premium??

I'm in the Vancouver area as well. The collector coverage is very reasonable, especially if you are able to make use of a collector multiplate. To go on a multiplate all of the vehicles must first be accepted as collector vehicles. It is a bit of a process to get the collector status, but once the bike qualifies it can then go on the list. My total cost for five bikes plated for a full year, 2 million liability, is just $550.
By comparison the non collector 05Triumph Daytona was about $500 for six months.

I believe the original pre production prodi racer was Red.
Might be a nice color dabble with for a prodi racer.
I think LAB had an article on it.

I'm pretty sure all the PRs delivered to customers were yellow. I got mine in 1972, and ended up buying some replacement bits later to repair crash damage. The factory bits were only available in yellow. I saw quite a few PRs at the time, both here and in England, and all were originally yellow. All the advertising brochures showed the customer PR only in yellow, although they did show some pictures of the factory race bike, which was modified in other ways besides the paint job. Quite a few PRs, including mine, were painted in different color schemes by their owners during their lifetime. The race shop painted the factory race bikes whatever color they wanted, usually to please sponsors like John Player. It didn't take long for the replica parts to show up from a variety of suppliers, and they were available in a other colors. The standard color scheme for the club racer (short stroke 750) they tried to sell later on was white, but that was a different bike from the "750 Commando Production Racer", which were delivered to customers in yellow. Hence the names "Yellow Submarine" and "Yellow Peril" that were frequently applied to them. The only color variations I know of on the production bikes was the side covers. Some of the early bike came with silver side covers, but all the later ones were yellow. There was an early pre-production PR concept bike that Cycle World did a track test on back in 1969, but it differed from the final production in several ways, including drum brake and different rear-set design. My memory says it might have been red, but I'm not sure.
