Looking to source a pair of stencils or masking decals. Not interested in the stickers, will be doing a two tone paint job. Have searched high and low and emailed every vinyl shop I can find. No one has any idea what I'm talking about. Help?

this is an area where google can be your friend - try "custom masking stencils." I vaguely remember a custom painter back in akron ohio that had a custom stenciling machine. not sure how he uploaded the image or script, but I would think any digital image could be outputted into a masking stencil. hope this helps. start here - http://decalboy.com/custom-cut-paint-mask-stencil.htm

Find a small sign shop, or one that will do custom work and tell them you need vinyl letters but want them picked in reverse so that you can use them as stencils. When they cut vinyl letters it is just a roll of vinyl which is cut and then the shop peels away the unwanted part leaving the vinyl letters. If they do it in reverse, it leaves a stencil.

Thank you all. Joe, I had seen that site a few times in my searches but something didn't feel right about it so I passed it by. Will check them out again.

T Ingermanson, I believe the dimensions I took of the logo I have on my old tank are 6 1/4" long by 3 1/4" tall. Thats the actual lettering size, if that makes sense. What would that run me for a set of 4 and shipping to NJ?

Thank you!

I did exactly that with a local sign shop. They scanned the vinyl Norton logo that I gave them and created reverse pick stencils on a roll. I think I had to buy 100 of them, the smallest size sheet their cutter could handle. Got them somewhere in my shop, I'll take a look. I think I had them do "750 Commando" too, I was painting a buddy's 72 at the time.

I had emailed quite a few of the local sign shops and they either said hell no or have not responded. Have reached out again to the non-responders. I mean heck, I cant even get the local tubing bender to get back to me about bending a frame hoop!

The cost of shipping is fine.

Do you want a second color outline?

The vinyl I use is specifically for masking, so the adhesive isn't too strong (peels easily after paint), works with oil or water-based paints, and is transparent so you can see exactly where you're placing it.

It's best to use them right away, as once cut, any vinyl shrinks away from it's original cut and you lose the ability the register for outlining, etc. Within a couple weeks is fine, but more than that and you're pressing your luck. Do you want/need them now?

The vector file is for the older, slimmer Dominator logo, not the rounder, plumper Commando version.

Sorry the pic of the screen has the weird blue shadow. The cut vinyl won't be pixelated, the screen just shows it that way, so it doesn't take the program forever to load as you zoom around. If you want an outline, I'll put registration crosses on the sides, so you can fringe the top and bottom for the compound curve of a tank, but I'll let you cut the fringe.

With an outline, if I take the width out to 6.25", it shows a height of just over 2.2"

Ok? If so, PM me your address.

Wow, that is amazing! Yes they will be put to use right away.

I will check my dimensions when I get home from work.

I rather the Domi style script, works for me. I see what you mean about the outline. Great idea. The reason of asking for 4 is in case I mess up, which is inevitable.

Do you have the Commando and even the new Norton logos? If not I'm happy to send them to you.

When I had the tank sign made for my Seeley, I simply found the Norton logo in a magazine and scanned it. Then took it to the sign-maker - They can make it any size you like. I had tank signs made for my Egli which were computer printing. It turned out the font was 'cheque-book'. So that was even easier. Twenty bucks, done and dusted.

The possibilities of this are endless. Another possibility is to etch aluminum with such a vinyl stencil. They do this on weapons all the time, use aluminum etch and a vinyl sticker to mask the areas that are not to be etched. I have in mind trying to do this on a engine cover to produce aluminum ridges and then drop enamel into the recessed areas.

The Norton signs on my Seeley look as though they have been painted onto the tank. If you are etching aluminium, it is usual to use caustic soda - so make very sure you kill the excess with a weak acid immediately after the etch. Any porosity could give you a problem

I bought a set of black diecut vinyl "decals" from Old Britts and the painter just used them to mask and then peeled them off.
