Whats the best way to straighten my Commando swing arm it has a 1/4 inch twist? spindle fits perfect in bushes

Swing arm mounted in the bike, on the centerstand, two stout friends to hold the bike, Long lever mounted to the axle holes to twist back. Easy job.
Lifelong fabricator.

Reverse the energy that caused it.
Did you hit a curb on the rear or a giant hole ? If so the R. wheel would be the first concern , to check it's straightness. Swing arm is stronger than the spoked wheel. The weakest item bends first.

That must have been one heck of a whack, perhaps combined with a heavier-than average load of humanity & baggage...

Sometimes things are just known to happen spontaneously when you're having fun leaving little or no recollection.

Thanks, I'll put the swing arm in my press and straighten her out. I'm rebuilding the gearbox and Isolastics I don't know how the swing arm got bent just bought the bike. When I took the gearbox apart because of a funny clunck, when in third gear, the lay shaft came out in halves at the third gear? Origjnal layshaft roller bearing with nice tight fit in main case. Any thoughts? good jokes are accepted HAHA

Check the right hand end...the bush in the kickstart quadrant......they wear and allow the layshaft to thrash about!

Broken layshaft? Really not that rare, particularly in 'abused' gearboxes....

You should probably also change mainshaft and all bearings anyway if you are looking to ensure it doesn't happen again.

If the drive side of the swing arm was bent down.....previous owner was having too much fun with too much power. It goes along with the gearbox broken layshaft. Wheelies, burn outs and excess stress are not friendly to a gearbox originally designed for engines with 25 or less horsepower. Any signs of a supercharger having been fitted at some time?

Once you have it straight then add the gussets the factory used to strengthen the swing arm if they are not there now.

You need 2 and they fit in the 2 inner corners

I suspect many left the factory like that.
As swinging armes were assembled in one or more jig(s) and subjected to quality control after assembly, a doubt there was a twist in fresh manufactured samples.

Norwood describes damage as twist, but the 1/4" deformation appears to be a bent leg?

There is always a margin of safety in mechanical and chassis components. When a twist or curvature has manifested itself, an abnormal loading condition occured. The likely reason for a twisted or bent swinging arm are loads incurred in a traffic accident.

The hit that caused the twist in your swingarm may also have caused the swingarm to bend to the left or right as well. I'm sure that someone on this forum will have a print that will give you the dimensions and angles to check with.

If your budget can stand the hit you can fit a later model gusseted swingarm and worry about something else. Do check the GB shafts for run out before buying new ones.

Best.

I have also had the twisted swing arm issue, bike is currently being rebuilt so i just bought a new one. Andover have these in stock again right now.
