Hi Gang:

I am looking for the equivalent of this forum for Norton Singles...Time to start tearing into this 49 Inter project and I could use some experienced minds like yourselves.

Anyone know a forum that focuses primarily on Norton Singles?

TIA!

Somebody did try to get one going on Yahoo groups (i think it was) a year or few ago.
It didn't gain much momentum and until you posted i had forgotten about it. Can't find it now so perhaps it has gone.
The best place i find is the NOC (UK) forum.

Well, this forum does have this section; there are a few folks here with knowledge and resources that would almost certainly be interested in sharing their knowledge.

I hope this Norton singles one or "Other Nortons" attracts talk & pictures of them.. It's been a long term goal of mine to own a nice Norton single preferably a 500 pre swing arm model but I'm getting less picky. Just never got around to buying one.

Nothing like a period pic or 2 for an accurate view of one to help begin a resto.
This is said to be Bill Griggs on his, circa 1950.

I wouldn't like to say if thats a 1949 or 1950 year model - its labelled as a 1949 - but it looks new and shiny, optional dual seat and all...
Someone who knows their UK reg numbers may be able to comment ?
No paint on the oil tank either, which is unusual.
Iron head and cylinder too, alloy was an option and usually for racing...

Its perhaps also worth commenting that all the Norton brochures show the Inter with a painted and striped tank,
where they were actually sold with chromed tanks and the D-shaped painted panel in front of the kneepads. (like the above pic).
Whether this was to emphasise a connection with the Manx, or because the marketing dept didn't know what the sales dept
was pushing out the door, who knows....

Here's a picture of the 1947 Norton International that was presented to Geoge Formby

And then there is Geoff Dukes 49 Inter that he won the Clubmans TT on that year.

Also a restored view...

Hi,

This book also has been helpful and quite informative on rebuilding the engine. It comes up on ebay regularly as well.

Here's a pic of mine which I will be hill climbing in November along with a few mates and their bikes. So far we have a Mk111 Commando, Model 30 Inter, Model 40 Inter (mine), 57 Model 30 Manx and a 25 Flat tank 16h

As you say, Mitchell regularly has it on ebay, for less $$ than he shows there !
It is of course for the cammy models.

Nice bike, happy hillclimbing. !

P.S. How did you anchor that 8" brake to the girderforks...

C'do has been apart too long. Yearning to ride, but is a 47 16H really what I want to jump into? It has a charging problem, but i'vedealt with that on BSA & C'do.
How does it compare to ES2 or Matchies of the time for power and problems?
Thanks for any observations. Rick

They make lovely old relaxed mode cruisers.

But its a sidevalve, so has about at most 2/3 ( ie 12 hp) of the power of anything ohv,
so you won't be doing 70 mph down the interstates anytime soon.
If you can find back roads to pobble along at 45 mph to 55 mph,
it and you will be happy.
Best if you can find owners of similar bikes to ride with, to ward off all the tintops.
Give us a ride report if you go with it, and remember Have Fun !

Always useful to have literature for the old model bikes, is there any way you can obtain copies of these without incurring the high postage cost from down under :?: :(

Mitchell has put this book together from a variety of Norton souces, and is aimed almost entirely at cammy Nortons.
Something the factory should have done, but never did.
If it gets into digital format anywhere, there goes his supply of beer money from the sales of it. ?
If you can afford to own a cammy, you can afford the postage of one booklet ?!

Thanks for replys. Looks like a great book for anyone with Inter or Manx. Bookmarked the links page on that site. Just reading through Bacons books-Norton Singles; and Buyers Guide. Wondering why so many 16H with the obvious power increase of OHV. Cheaper to buy, I guess; maint. seems about the same. Skimmed through Haycrafts Book of the Norton- seems to have most everything on the bike covered for maint. & overhaul. Covers 38- 56 & have another Haycraft for 32-39=all models= if anyone needs the older one let me know.
Might get to St Paul to look at the bike this week, even if its below freezing all week.
Lots of county blacktop twistys through the coulees this part of WI- great for slow riding. Just need spring rains to wash the winter sand off the corners. Too old to ride all winter like when I was young. Rick

I'm very impressed. Why has it got the mirror mounted on the top of the forks, do you use the bike on public roads ?

Mirror is mounted to the handlebars as I have it on concessional licence. Yes I use it on the road quite regularly and also hillclimbing.
