Hello everyone. Took over dad's 71 commando. Running great when parked 1990 cleaned up coil connections installed new points red light on with key in start position no spark any help appreciated

1990 is 17 years ago. Start with a new battery then clean up fuse connections. Then new plugs. Clean up ground point. We will not talk about carbs and fuel yet.

Check that you have correctly installed the ring terminals under the white insulators. If the terminals are fitted under the nuts, it earths/grounds the points.

If that isn't the problem, check power is reaching the points, also check there is a good ground/return path between the engine and battery (+) this is usually a red wire (or wires) connecting from the head steady to battery(+).

Hi PJ

welcome to the wonderful world of old Nortons

have you obtained a workshop manual yet, you do realize that these bikes are positive ground, right?

we are here and happy to help you out, do the basics, new battery, new plugs NGK BP7ES, get a strobe light to check the timing, can you tell us where you are - maybe a local Commando owner can come over, talk with you
