Always a great ride and get together. I actually feature a couple of times in the second video with my Norton all packed up for travelling. I had come down to Perth on it for this event and then, when it was over, rode the 450km or so back home. Featured in both videos is the wonderful Mundaring Weir Road, which is always a great experience.

Sorry guys , but I don't like it .
The group rides ( parades ..? ) , lining up , sniffing over each others bikes , beer in hand , junk food .. could not be further away of my idea of motorcycle riding .
And riding without gloves is not only illegal ( in Europe ), it is plain stupid !

When you've finished looking down your noses, this is a social event, not a race. While Greg doesn't wear gloves in this video, I wouldn't ride without them, but that's his choice. This ride happens once a year, where all the Norton owners and RIDERS get together for a social event.

No one is looking down noses here at all.

No one is criticising the events, or the enjoyment had by the partakers at all.

And certainly no one mentioned racing !

What, aren’t we allowed to simply say something is ‘not our thing’ any more?

Sorry? No one is criticising? Read again. You missed a bit.

Many people who ride on public roads have never crashed at high speed. I once wore a three inch diameter flat spot on the top of a crash helmet. And I've had a fat lip from my own hand being driven into my face. I would not ride three metres without protective gear.

Maybe you’re right, but it’s not how I read it. What I read was someone explaining why they don’t like it, and even apologising up front for doing so!

But you’re right, there was some strong criticism in there ... about riding without gloves.

Gloves topic aside, you’re free men in a free country doing what you want to Ken, so more power to you.

I’m also a free man in a free country, and I prefer to spend my limited motorcycle related time on other things.

Simple as that mate. Nothing to argue about.

In Australia, we would call this post of yours "a load of wank". Just sayin'.

I was always taught that it takes two to tango my friend.

So I would agree that this thread of ours has indeed become a load of wank.

You are a guy who whittles a point on an Olive branch to poke the giver in the eye.

Just sayin’

Argue away by yourself, I’m signing off.

Love the videos , and I love to ride with & without protective gear , including a helmet , I know the consequences , seen the end result many times .
You pay your money , you take your choice .

Fullauto :

1.
For various reasons , I have a profound aversion for riding in groups .
I ride either allone , or with good friends that I completely thrust . 2 or 3 max.

2.
I can understand “ social event “ :
a gathering with family or friends ..people I like .
The make of motorcycle a person rides has little to do with that .
The choice of people I want to socialise with is based on other criteria .
And by reading some of your posts , I doubt you would qualify .

3.
Youtube if awash with much better video's .
Just showing a few Nortons doesn't makes it worth watching .
I know what a Norton ( and a hotdog ) looks like ..

Ludwig, maybe I took offence at your wording. I realise that you are a direct speaker to the point of bluntness and that's fine. Personally, I never ride a bike with any alcohol in my system and I always wear gloves. However, your terminology is a little condescending. "Sniffing each others bikes", "junk food", "parade" etc. These are just a bunch of blokes, with a mutual love of and respect for Nortons and it is the one time of the year when we get together as a group socially. I only know a few of the people on the ride, but I get to see a few different bikes. This is a traditional Australian way of having a get together. If you are into cucumber sandwiches, caviar and champagne whilst discussing how much your Vincent has gone up in value since your last club event, then that's fine too. Not my cup of tea either.

Regarding my posts, I only post when I have something to say on a subject. From personal experience and observation. Not posts about the latest hare brained scheme to "perfect" a Norton, thought up at a moment's notice, and then presented to the forum without thought or research, as some specialise in. If you don't want to ride with me, that's fine too. I don't particularly enjoy group rides either, but I do it once a year at this event. I am a solitary rider (some would say "riding with all his friends") and that is what I like most. I do, actually, have friends, just like everybody else does.

Jeez, it's just a Norton vid, a little piece of winter escapism, hardly something to argue over.
I particularly liked the sound quality.
Usually old bikes on YouTube end up sounding like a sewing machine at best, a bag of hammers at worst.
Somehow the film maker filtered out all of that Norton tappet noise and just captured that great Commando exhaust bark.

I second the sound quality, rare to hear online. The throaty roar from the pea shooters is probably the favourite part of my rides.

I'm a bit skeptical these videos were actually shot in Oz. From all my research on that continent, I have found it to be quite an unpleasant place, especially for bike riders. Getting fuel seems a bit problematic....heres a mob trying to get into a filling station:

Its the Aussie way, getting together, having fun, putting sh.t on each other and its even better when motorcycles are involved, I have been riding with mates ever since I left school at 15 and so many left school at the same time and we all got into dirt bikes then later when we could get our licences road bikes, we are all still riding except for the ones who are under the thump of the wifives who demanded the man gets rid of that thing as they are dangerous.
In my local area of Sandgate it was always a motorcycle heaven from way back in the 20s and every so often we all get together with over 200 to 300 biker friends and usually goes for 3 days setting up away from others usually out at someones property or at the back of some out of the way country pub, usually have a few bands playing, lots of games to play during the day, drinking lots of beer, perving on all the sheilers (girls to the unknown) and where ever we have it the local comunity all get involved, the local rotory clubs cater for the food, the local pub makes lots of money selling cans of booze, the scout groups make money collecting the discared cans, they set up a dirt drag strip for the ones that want to prove whos faster, the local police even set up at the front gate so if anyone is leaving they can blow in the bag to see if they are clear to ride home, so no leaves drunk while on the road, the Ambos are on hand for any minor accidents and there is never any problems and if there was its delt with pretty quick and you get there your own way no need to ride in a massive group and you leave when you want, we normally pay a small fee of $20 to pay for the bands, you set up camp or lay your swag beside your bike.
All bikes and riders are welcome and everyone is there for one reason to have FUN, if your not into that then you just don't go, so simple, but its a great way to seeing friends you haven't seen for a long time or just making new friends.
Once a year where we all can let our hair down and not have any worries to worry about, life can be hard enough as it is so having that time together is very important and even the locals who don't even ride bikes are all welcome to come along.
We are not a bikie gang or not even a club, we are all just mates who think its very important to get toegether once in a while and to remember fallen mates, to remember the good old days or all the fun times we have had over the years.

As for wearing gloves who cares if you wear them or not, here in Aussie land its just way to hot and humid, well in my state of Queensland anyway, we have very hot summers that last for 8 months before it starts to cool down, but our winters are not that cold here and its up the each other to wear what you want without some law makers telling us what to do, myself I don't wear gloves and in winter I might wear my fingerless gloves, I like to feel my handle bars and wearing gloves you don't quite get that feeling in the hands and thats my choose, just look at some of the temps that our country is getting at the moment, no rain, droughts and very high temps and riding sometimes is like riding in oven, but hey we are a tough bunch down under and the best part we all stick together looking after each other, where just a friendly mob who enjoy what we do best, not many countries understand our ways but we don't really care.
If you come to Australia for a visit and spend time with us you to will learn to like our wierd and wonderful ways and everone is welcome.

Ashley

Forgot to say we also have some great riding roads but we also have some very long straight roads where fuel becomes a problem so carring a bit of extra fuel will get you to that next fuel stop but thats usually only needed when heading accross the country to Perth, Western Australia.
