In that case Norton used wood screws for a while, before adopting allen screws !
Actually, don't think they ever did use allen screws...

Dunstall also states that the Domiracer ..."was exquisite stuff, too : chromed Mahle aluminium barrels, no liner...we got a a box full of camshafts, but no 2 were the same. Which good camshaft goes with which exhaust system & which set of pistons? It was an adventure."

Wood screws!

Ever?

You wouldn't have to look very hard to find Allen screws on a Commando.

We were referring to them retaining the steel bearing top-hat housings - in Norton crankcases and camboxes.....

S'pose you are going to tell us they are in your Norton ?!

We ? Royal are we...Rohan..L.O.L. - I`ll bet those 'wood screws' were finest marine chandlers quality brass items though eh? ...L.O.L.

Ah....slotted, countersunk head, machine screws, then?

The Kawasaki solution to main bearings rotating in the cases was to machine grooves into the mating face circumference & run an O-ring arrangement, but that is with horizontally split cases, dunno if it would work in the press-in Norton application.

In ring-dings, the crankcase chambers need to be sealed from each other - for obvious reasons (loss of secondary compression being one of them), hence the 0-rings.

In real motors, with h-split cases, the bearings are often pegged to stop them rotating. Honda, at least, make the peg hollow, and feed oil into the bearing with it, via a drilling in the outer bearing.

Blimey LAB, that one would use woodscrews !
Machine screws could well be the correct technical term for what they are in real ones...

Rohan, 2T crankcase seals are discrete items, nothing to do with mainbearing/crankcase seating per-se, so, once again, your assumptions seem to be getting the better of you...

2 strokes can also need around the bearings sealed.
Not just maybe sealed...

h-split motors can have a groove machined in the outer bearing (and cases), with a steel ring/circlip in there - to locate the bearing laterally..

More homework required Rohan! Rolling element 2T mains are not sealed like, say - wheel bearings may be, they, in fact, must be open to the available oil...

I've got a little 2 stroke Suzi twin (project)(it was cheap, very cheap !)

Whether it ever sees the light of day is a different matter....

Rohan, are any of your bikes operational?
P.M. me if you ever get your Commando running, seriously - if I like it, I might make an honest ride out of it, & take it off your list of burdensome shed bikes..

Hmmm, anyone else here think this is getting seriously, um, weird ??

Instead of coveting my Nortons, why don't you find your own and show us what you can do.

I `d say its 'weird' that someone 'covets' a Commando - & has one- but doesn`t ride it or keep it in running order, just leaves it in a shed..
As I said, if you are past it, then why not pass it on to someone who will use it, as the maker intended..

Since I'm keeping some of the folks on this this list rich (!) from supplying parts for the rebuild, I'd say your comments are seriously flawed.

And seriously weird as well. ?
LAB, what think you ?

And its not like Commandos are rare or an endangered species.
Find your own.

Ok, sure Rohan, relax, I was only offering to rescue your Commando, & you from its weird modernity.
Its seems we are both at a ballpark stage anyhow, having Commando parts happening along, but not yet running..
I do have other bikes that go, though..

" I do have other bikes that go, though.. " after a fasion . . . sometimes . . . How abut a few pictures of these engineering marvels .

Matt, do you really want to go there?
I ride to work, mate...How`s Shank's pony working for you?
You have ridden [poorly] several of my bikes, within the past few years...last time I had a ride on one of yours was 30+ years ago,[ probably, your bent, rough running Commando].
What have YOU got now?
In fact, have you posted any pix of your sad old Norton?
Like when you put hooligan handlebars & a Hi-rider tank on it - it was painted rough black with some depressing Neil Young slogan written across it?

You can hand it out , but you cant take it . Was wondering if I was stupid enough to let you ride it ? Ace barts are Hooligan ? Hows the oil leaks ?  as YOU say . :p

My apologies Rohan . Could bring ' daytona into it , but it would get messy . Involves a wall , brains & a hose . not to mention a H1 .
