Hi all,

I'm ready to paint my Roadster tank and panels, and my vinyl cutter guy needs vector graphics format images - incidentally it's an 850 Commando
I want to do the graphics in gold with a black border, so not easy to come by!

I tried scanning some graphics I already had, but the results were very poor :(

Any help gratefully appreciated!

http://www.brandsoftheworld.com has a vector image of the Norton logo - you have to sign up, but it's free - I used it for the one on my truck.
edit - was going to e-mail it to you, but you would be better served checking out the website - there are a couple there, and they look slightly different (beyond color, more style of the text - but one of them is gold with a black line around it, that's on the second page)
I could e-mail them to you if you don't want to sign up to the website, the only issue is you probably won't be able to look at them on your home computer, unless you have the appropriate software.
Let me know,
Greg

Probably a stupid question, but what color are you going to paint the bike using the black outlined gold graphics?

Just curious...

Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you one.

Greg,

Thanks for the link - just what I needed; pity there's no 850 version, but I can convert the 7 to an 8 then I can start playing.
Couldn't help noticing your sig - where do you get pies from in Virginia? :P

The decals are a rare combination - a guy on evilbay did a set for me, but they were a bit marginal on quality.
I may need to start doing this for a living, so no compromises!
I'm emulating the bike in this brochure (Mine's a MkIIa, so not 'strictly correct')

Here's where I was up to this evening - metalflake is an utter pain to do, but the effect is worth it ;)
It's actually a fair bit darker than the photo in real life, and closer to the brochure bike.

I originally did the paint in a pale blue to emulate the 'S' scheme, but the effect was rather too pale for my liking:

All good fun!

Hobot, did you get yours done in vinyl? I rather like the idea of having the name on the sidepanel, but with mine it changes depending on how it's running!

there aren't any - and the nearest real bacon is a 5 hour drive away, and football's different here - they should call it 'catch' - thanks for reminding me, now I'm sad and homesick

Where you from in the good old North West?

I stand to be corrected, but the blue bike in the brochure picture
is blue with silver decals and pinstripes. (??)

No black outline on the 'decal' either, thats just some funny lighting ?

Opethiselps.

BTW, what is that blue color called.
Its darker than earlier Fireflake Blues ?
Royal Blue was the solid plain blue on the Interstates ?
Pacific Blue is the lighter metallic blue the 850s appeared in...

P.S. Have a NOS sidecover in that colour, new in its box.
Unfortunately the version that came without the pinstripes and decal.

Ugh, Andy, no as too many other things to spend and do my C'do's so delayed so long the local decal-sign shop I was going have do it went out of business. They said if I could get a digital image they could read they could manipulate it in size color and material printed on. They have printers that also cut as they print and saw them make signs to stick on large trucks. Stencils are also on my mind by this process.
I may steal the spiked end font to put on Peels seat back as tank already has sprayed on stencil gold Norton logo.

I come from Leyland originally, now live in the (wet) hills west of Garstang.
Sorry for the sad reminder - I tried watching a game in the bar last time I was in the US, and er...well, I know what you mean!
I had the pleasure of watching my US counterparts watching Liverpool play a couple of years back, and they couldn't believe how much running around they were doing - and without regular rests!

Hmmmm...not convinced - the earlier 'S' Commandos certainly had gold decals outlined in black, and looking again at the brochure, the lighter (silver/gold) colour is a lot thinner than the other bike which is consistent with an outlined graphic, so I'm still going with the black outline.

Thanks for the photo of the correct blue - I just couldn't get a match with available flakes in the UK, and the lighter blue just didn't look right.
I have an original Interstate tank and bought a pair of NOS panels in the Royal Blue which is a very deep, plain colour - not all that pretty.

The flakes are 'deep blue', but since I got them I've seen the Royal Blue here...

Which looks like a pretty good match... maybe I should re-think?

Must've been a match at Old Trafford... :) Go Reds!

Do yourself a hugh favor and send the tank to Brent Bunger at Vintage vendor in VT, he does great work. LWall

I wouldn't take Norvils decal range as the gospel truth - their 028650 for all early nortons doesn't have regd trade mark along the bottom, looks somewhat bloated over the original slim Norton logo. And sounds vinyl not decal....

Having said that, I rather like the thought of an 850 Commando scheme of metallic blue with gold pinstripes and black edged gold decals. Hmmmm.

Hey B+Bogus, I like your "Metalic Blue, Metalflake Blue, Fireflake Royal Blue" ... or whatever Blue you wish to call it. Nice Norton silver decals with black edges too. Just so long as we get some more "gaudy flake" Blue ones out THERE !!! Cheers ...

Well,

After much faffing about I've managed to track down some decent looking blue flake, and I've had some stencils cut to do the silver/black logos.
The dark blue really did look stunning, but it was just too dark :(
I ended up stripping everything back to bare metal first, because the tank was starting to get heavy!
I shot a black 2K basecoat, which was probably the best topcoat I ever applied straight from the gun!

Norton Graphics

It seemed a real shame to scuff it all up to metalflake it, and it would have looked great with gold graphics, but I'm set on the gaudy look ;)

The tank still needs another coat of lacquer to properly level it all off, but I'm pretty pleased so far...

Norton Graphics

I haven't seen it in natural light yet - hopefully I'll get a shot tomorrow.

Painting really is fun - honest!

Got more lacquer laid on today - very pleased with how it's turning out so far

Norton Graphics

Really looking forwards to masking the pinstripes...

Finally got the job done :P

I remember thinking a while ago that some painters charged rather a lot of money for their work, but if I charged a reasonable hourly rate for this one it would have to be well over a grands-worth of work, not to mention the cost of materials

That said, I'm pleased with the outcome, and hopefully it'll be on the bike tomorrow.

The masked-off graphics came out well, but were a bit of a pain. Still well worth the effort to have a contour-free tank, though.
