Regular AMC gearbox 4 speed:
with the cam plate exactically 180 degrees out...4th gear cam detent exactically UP, knuckle lined up with top stud, will now be in 1st gear.
the 1234/4321 action will be reversed,
The problem arises that the shifting increments of the ratchet plate is the only thing that will put it in approximately the next gear and the cam detents are never near the detent plunger at all. There will be no positive retention other than the 2,3 & 4 gear dogs holding the gears in position. They have a retention angle in the dog profile.
1st gear dogs are not reverse angle cut so it will be easier to slide out of engagement.
