Hello,

I have a 1972 Norton Commando with a fiberglass Fastback tank and tail (converted from a Roadster). Recently I had the rubber strap break which loops under the frame and fastens the rear section of the gas tank secure. Can anyone point me in the right direction on where to get a new one. I've done some searching on the internet, but haven't had any luck. Thank you very much.

Or you could go to a seal / bearing outlet and get a large section O - Ring that will loop under the frame tube and hook each end to the tank spigots.
You just reminded me I forgot to get one with my Andover Norton order.

Here is the original part with loops each end and under a dollar.

Rural engineers supplies , ' O ' Ring seal for Vacum cleaner , if they still use them . Catapult Supplyer ? :D

Thank you very much for the replies. I will take a look at all of these options. After searching for quite a while with no success, it was suggested that I subscribe to your site and it proved to be a great idea. Thank you again!

If you have an old 300 or 400 inner tube, they can be cut in sections for the band.

Unless your tank is sealed with an ethanol proof sealant, you really need to think about your tank. Petrol in the US and Europe contains Ethanol, which rots fiberglass tanks. Get it sealed or replace with steel/alloy.

Surgical tubing tied with a fisherman's knot, or small diameter bungee cord tied with the same.

Thank you again for the replies, they have been helpful for sure. The fiberglass tank has been a concern of mine. I've been told it was sealed up years before I bought it and from feeling around inside that seems to be the case. Its going to come off this winter for a facelift and some paint so I will take a good look once it has been drained. Thank you for the advice.

The problem with the UK market has been that sealants that worked fine for 10 years or more, suddenly dissolved when ethanol was introduced in fuel.

I would be careful and drain your fuel tank when the bike is not being used.

I have a feeling that in the UK market a product called Petseal and early versions of the POR 15 tank sealant are causing problems.

that's the later model Johnny, the early ones had tabs with the rubber bands. I think the metal piece started in 71?

Fastbacks used the rear rubber strap only including the Long Range steel fuel tank in the pic (fwiw)

You can see the tabs and band on the back of my Apr 69 production date here.
