Hi
To my knowledge there were three iterations of kick starters for norton Atlas's and Commando's. Anybody happened to know which works best with rear sets ?

1. Looking for an option that provides the most clearance between rear set curved arm and kickstart arm and enabling you to get your toe on the shifter pedal

2. Least amount of kick start projection from spline thus not impending your ability to get your toes on there shifter.

3. The final 850 Commando kickstarted projects out to far and gets in the way of a shift but provides the most rear set curved arm and muffler clearance

4. The Dommi kickstarter provides the most access to the shifter pedal but provides the least curved rear set arm/ kick starter clearance

5. RGM's folding kickstarter doesn't solve any problems

6. Was wondering if the 2nd iteration Commando kick starter would provide a happy medium

Thoughts welcomed. Than ks

I have only ever had Dunstall rear sets on my ‘68 Commando and the standard kick starter never gave me any problems. My Domi never had a kick starter or shaft (weight saving) and I push started it everywhere.

After using the Atlas kicker clocked in different positions I ended up using one from a Dominator. This is with Tickle rear sets.

Hi Rearsets , I tried on my 88ss ,finding them sloppy in changing gear ,K/start can get in the way. Alternative you could dispense with the rearsets re /bend and or shorten the gear lever and reverse fit .Of course you will get a reverse gear change pattern . 2nd alternative is to fork out for a reverse camplate to retain original gear changing .I got mine way back from Gus Kuhn London but they are listed on Norton motors website. 3rdly you can like me be masocismic by removing the K/start and the shaft blanked off . Machine the alloy blanking to acept the layshaft with the end ground down to accept a needle roller bearing ,R.G.M U.K. stock them .Hope this helps Bo.

I'm putting Commando engine/trannie in Slimline FB
So to get clearance to rear sets I got a Honda 750 kick start lever and married to a Norton/AMC kick state lever spline and works perfectly with good clearance and better leverage for starting.
Good luck
Peter

Just an update. What worked perfectly for me was the standard Commando lever. It clears the exhaust header, which is an Armour 1-5/8 swept back pipe, on full extension. The rearset curved shift arm clears it nicely, and I am able to comfortably get my foot on the shift pedal
