Hi all,
Just finished rebuilding my " NA" AMC gearbox with new bearings and o rings and have re-assembled all of the gears and camplate. Before installing the inner cover I noticed that the kickstarted would not rotate counterclockwise. I have included a photo of the situation. The problem seems to revolve around the pawl and it's relationship to its stop. If I depress the spring loaded pawl, then the shaft does move but then the outside diameter of the actual kickstart body runs into the stop.

What am I missing? Thanks

Is that a notch in the stop or a shadow? If a notch in the stop, that aint right. It might function that way once the kickstart is on the layshaft, but I've no experience with that stop having a notch in it. The stop should be flat across the bottom. If it is a shadow on the stop, your kickstart gizmo is not in the circular recess in the case far enough.

Even though I've had a Norton for over 50 years I'm not an expert with the AMC gearbox. Lot of members on this site are though. You'll get some useful help eventually.

Think I may have found the problem. My part # 04-0071 kickstart pawl plate seems to be deformed when compared to the Andover Norton Past. Anybody know what the purpose of this plate is?

Thanks . Not sure what happened to it but yes it’s obviously not right. I was wondering if I could simply take a Dremel and re-contour the stop but then after what L.A.B said its purpose is, taking “meat” off the existing may not allow the pawl to disengage
