Norton 961 Commando a keeper?

Another good wheeze is to say you are going to the bank with important documents to be signed....don't forget the documents:)

I sent a photo of me outside a bank via WhatsApp to my children showing them I was usefully using the lockdown time whizzing
about in the sunshine on my motorbikes.

Our daughter is a medic at a large hospital. She was in charge of issuing drugs to patients on several heart and stroke wards, but
has been transferred to Critical Care for the last three weeks, probably as she is young and fit. She is working long hours, little PPE
and says they are short of drugs. (Fast Eddie best get his Calpol soon and keep it in his pocket)

She said if any old codgers who fall off their motorbikes end up in critical care they might not get the polite, professional care of
normal times. She went on to explain some procedures that may be applied to said old codgers which sounded a bit medieval
rather than medical and I'm not sure would be allowed to be printed on this family forum.

Take care not to fall off; especially Fast Eddie as he is within range of the major hospital where our daughter works. I'd miss
his posts and his wife might miss the bits non-surgically removed in critical care

Too Right FE you stay out of there - just remember Garner's trick of taking in working units for servicing then removing spare parts to repair others!!!!!!!!

Clive, you nor anyone else needs to do anything to make me do everything within my power to avoid hospitals!

(I was gonna say ‘avoid hospitals like the plague’ but that seemed insensitive under the current circumstances)

Don’t Panic Mr Mannerin’

I’ve been taking it steady boys. Not sure if you follow the other forums on here much, but I’ve been using my T140 SFESV (Shopping For Essential Supplies Vehicle) which promotes a more leisurely pace...

She's a beut. Had one in the 70's, flat-track styled it, wish I'd kept it!

I would be very wary on the roads now that they are virtually empty.
There are far fewer vehicles on the roads for the local constabulary to focus their attention on.
No doubt they are as bored as we are, and looking for violators.

Have you increased the shed size again or still the Monster 1200 and the above. Actually, i think you still have the old commando. Are you after something fast now the superlight won't appear or will you be buying Peter Hickmans

4 bikes in the shed currently, plus one in my Dads shed and one in the house under the stairs. S’wot stairs are for right...?

so that’s balls out riding then......

I can post with some joviality as I don't have to deal with the awful stuff our daughter is dealing with.

This morning I went to deliver shopping to my 91 year old mother. On a straight open section of country road
a UJM came past my car at well over 100 mph and disappeared into the wooded area where the road narrows
into slight bends. In less time than I could think tosser a refuse lorry came out of the dark wooded area slightly
on the wrong side of the road.

I presume that the UJM rider is not aware that the Ambulance service are a bit busy with many staff off sick.

Following the ticking off by our daughter I'm going to fiddle with my isolasics this afternoon in the sun

Good luck and take care one and all

My 961 is gorgeous keeper..
I am keeping it in the garage till we get the all clear.
Yesterday could hear the wail of sports bikes on the cam around the country roads near where I live.
Selfish blighters!!!!

Yes I am keeping my 961 sport she looks well with the F1 ,rotary classic and model 50,
Also could here a few motors blasting up the main roads it’s painful to here.
There is only so many times you can mow the lawn in a day!

Good advice from daughter to stay off the road and apply spanners to front engine mount.

Found :
I had fitted the correct front tube (1/4" each end) for use with vernier adjusters 32 years ago - Good
Nylon isolastis washers instead of PTFE - probably came with the sst verniers from Fair Spares - Strange
RHS down pipe had a crack around weld at the head - would not have got very far up the road - Bad

I'll now get off this 961 thread as I don't have one and I have a down pipe to sort.

I'm definitely keeping my 961, since I have other bikes to ride in the event one bike is down for maintenance / repairs for a while. If I only had one bike, It would not be my Norton, MV Agusta or SWM - probably wouldn't be any of my current bikes. It would likely be a recent Ducati Multistrada Pikes Peak. To me that bike is the Swiss Army knife of motorcycles.

Everyone needs a Royal Enfield Himalayan,
24 bhp and it will do eighty two up.
Just..life in the slow lane.
It hasn’t got a rev.counter it’s got a calendar.
Not many sensors either.

I was taking a beer in the man cave earlier and polishing the bikes with a bit of muc off polish. I came to the conclusion that the 961 or rather what may come after it such as a "999 or 1200 Commando" will never be a volume bike made in the UK. But if the company goes into liquidation and someobody bids for whatever IP there is and decided to make small numbers and I really do mean small numbers from a small facility (not Donnington Hall), what would they sell for. Companies like Matisse sell their bikes for £17K+ I think and there really isn't much to them.

The quality of most parts on my 961 I think are very good, what if someone stuck to pretty much the same build quality, albeit improved on one or two things, maybe Al tank from the getgo, what would some folk pay for a british commando? unlikely they would achieve brough superior prices but would there be an appetite for something retailing around £25K and would a small concern make a living from that, assuming they have no Astons and ambitions of TT glory.

It would be interesting to find the demographics of current 961 owners..
Or who owns a 961 now that owned an original Commando in the seventies or eighties.
Did anybody buy a 961 not knowing anything about Norton’s.
