my '72 won't spark on kicking. it's got a boyer and when i rub the box leads together i get good spark. lay the plug on the engine and kick mightily, no spark. boyer says if it sparks rubbing the box leads together then that ensures everything is connected right and well. do they mean the boyer connections only? could i still have a bad kill or ignition switch and get spark rubbing the box leads together? thanx, rick

Maybe you have some cracks in the leads going to the pickup or the printed circuit is broken. You can measure the resistance of the pickup with an ohmmeter, can't say what it should be, but it should never be open or shorted.

had the same problem once, spark when rubbed because there was no shakin going on, shaking when kicking over or intermittent running because
had a fracture inside one of the wires half way through the timing cover: if your ground is verified good, then easy enough to run new wires down and
through timing cover. Did you replace the sodered stock leads to base unit with threaded posts so you can attach new wires securely ?

The Boyer has a very common and all too frequent problem with the leads from the pickup coils fracturing near the point where they are soldered to these coils. Vibration and soldered connections do not get along well. A visual inspection will NOT expose these fractures. The experience I've had is the bike will sometimes start, run on one cylinder from idle to ~3000 rpm. After ~3000 rpm it will run normally. The fix is to unsolder the wires, drill out the hole and use ring crimp connectors and 4-40 screws and nuts to attach the connectors to the coils. Crimp connectors that have a shrink sleeve are preferable, they relieve the stress at the connector.

well i cléanedthe kill switch cluster altho it didn't need it repaired a suspthis is an older boyerttect area of wiring in the pickup and now i have aspark on kicking this is an older boyer and i suspect the connections under the points cover are compromised i need to rewire the connections high desert can you elaborate on the wiring updates? pléase excuse my typing. just got a ps3 and am figuring out the keyboard. thans, rick
