Well, difficult to engage anyway. 30 miles from home stuck in 2nd and eventually with jiggling of the lever managed to get all gears and it took a few attempts each time but once the lever was moving the box went up and down ok. This is what I found today, the main return spring not completely broken but almost. I completed the break removing it. I was amazed I was able to select gears at all. So unreliable these 45 year old parts!!
No gears!!!

This is a typical example of a poorly made part. If I were you I would write a strongly worded letter to the makers!!!

Plus examine your warranty. There have been/are manufacturers who honor claims past their expiry date.

Hi Keith,
Yea that happened to me but with the smaller dog leg hairspring. Switched gears one way but not the other. I tried to find the piece with a magnet at the bottom of the gearbox but found nothing until I took the cover off and there it was still hanging on by a hair... partly just to fool me. I carry spares as well as a kick start pawl. If I am going on a distance trip. Can't trust these +40 year old bits.
Cheers,
Thomas
