A couple of weeks ago had no functioning elecrics, no light, horn, starter motor etc on My Norton MK111a (electric start) however bike started on kick start and everything then seemed to work fine and no problems for the next couple of weeks. However now no funcioning electrics apart from when ignition is switched on red light comes on for a split second, it won't fire on kick start, have put a meter on the battery and that's fine. Going to start looking for the problem - meter in hand but any suggestions where to start - Rectifier, Diodes, Capacitor?? If it comes to a replacement any suggestions - read various suggestions on single phase, 3 phase etc but will admit to being confused as to both do these replace recifier and diodes and if so how do you wire them in?

First thing (in my opinion) to check with a meter if power is getting as far as the ignition switch (brown/blue wire at Ign.Sw. T1)?

If Yes, try connecting the ignition switch brown/blue wire directly to the white wire?

If No, check for voltage along the brown/blue wire at various points such as the fuse holder and the 2MC blue can capacitor [Edit: also the white multi-connector underneath the fuel tank]?

Also check all earth/ground connections.

The red light coming on for a split second could be the 2MC discharging (the neutral light should also flash on briefly as well?).

The two Zener diodes on a Mk3 are connected to the AC output wires from the stator-so they shoudn't be the cause of the problem, and a rectifier failure wouldn't normally cause the "no power" symptoms.
