Good afternoon all, I have a problem with my 2015 SF, went to start it today it had been sitting for awhile while I had been away, it was on trickle charge and after taking the tank off battery shows 13.4 v

First off ignition on hit the button a bit of noise, but odd and then died. Like within under 2 sec.

There is no power to anything this is what I’ve checked

All fuses including the two under the tank all seem ok

Swapped all the relays around but there is no power to anything

Battery as above 13.4v

Put a test light across battery I thought it was odd with ignition on totally dead, ignition back off its good again, wasn’t sure if that was normal or not and checked my 750 Norton the same way and test light stayed good.

So no power getting from battery to rest of the bike or ignition system causing the problem

Has any one had this happen? Any thoughts or ideas to look at would be much appreciated

edit… just tried again turned light switch off and you could hear the four relays that live under the seat we’re going berserk and I had dash lights again, pulled all four out and the one that is closest to the air filter you could hear clicking in and out, light switch back on and nothing again?

I did put a new headlight globe in before I went away but also rode the bike 150 km after I did that without issue

Batteries can fail but still show good volts, but a large internal resistance stops them producing any amps. Load test the battery off the bike.
Yep I’ll do that, the cold weather has set in here and I had to replace my 750 one the other day

I just had a Gel battery fail after 8 years. Got one push on the starter button and then nothing but the multi-meter said 12.7V but it would not even light the ignition on bulb and the charger said it was full after 1 min of charge. A new battery solved the issue. Also had one fail the same on the way home in the dark on a B44 with large capacitor fitted, bike would not run with the lights on, pulled the fuse to take the battery out of circuit, one kick and back on my way with lights.

Yep I think that’s it, I’m heading in to town tomorrow and getting a new one, I’ve had the bike since new and only had two batteries so probably pushing the limits

Longish delay in riding before difficulty would suggest battery, although 13.4v should be more that enough to start the bike.

Whilst you’re fitting your new one, check the positive terminal lead. You’ll probably find that it has two cables secured within one non-insulated terminal end. This is bad practice and caused me significant difficulty (with my 2015 CR) until I pinned it down. Check that they are secured within the terminal end correctly. Good luck BD.

Yep I’ll check that thanks, hopefully they will have a battery in stock, I had to wait a few days for the last one, I’ll update once sorted

The battery voltage should stay on across the battery terminals when you turn the key to on.

Thanks Tony they never had a battery in stock but will have one for me tomorrow so will replace and hopefully that’s it, Battery was down to 10v this morning with the trickle left off last night, so I’m thinking that’s it. Will know tomorrow

Yes. That has happened to me twice. I checked all the fuses, relays. I was working on the tail light and forgot to turn of the ignition switch. Battery was good.
Blown fuse with a very slight filament break. Check again or change them all. Another time, a relay backed out from vibes very slightly. Bike was totally dead. Pushed it in, all was well. Put a thin strip of neoprene under the cover to keep them from backing out. Hopefully, your fix will be that simple.
