NGK BP 7ES RIP

I am pretty sure it was NGK a few years ago, when counterfeit plugs entered the supply chain and were being sold by Tim Green as well as Halfords here in the UK.

Here is a guide detailing a few things to look out for:
I know they have the same problem with Champion too.

Scary stuff!

i could be wrong, but I thought the majority of plugs being counterfeited were iridium's and not so much your basic copper core plugs. either way, always check for the fakes.

I needed genuine brand new NGK BPR 7ES prior to beginning my tinkering, and more than two were necessary to ensure I was starting with good plugs to rule out ignition altogether..... As you guys over there say 'fettling'.
Oh, BTW... the NGK all came out of the boxes and protective covers gapped exactly .030".

No you are right, while all variety of plugs are counterfeited, iridiums are a favourite because of the mark up.....more profitable

NGK are the favourites of counterfeiters apparently. I believe GSP have taken steps to ensure they sell the real thing these days.

There is no shortage of auto parts stores around me and they don't sell fake plugs. I'll pay the extra few pennies to buy local and get the real thing.

And I assume you regapped them to the correct .025?

do you think there would be any benefit by going to a slightly hotter plug? i'm thinking since most heat is dissipated through the outer threaded electrode, a slightly hotter plug might tend to slow the build up of those outer electrode deposits - ???? then again, I have fairly easy starts w/ no noticeable performance issues - probably should leave well enough alone. .
I run NGK BPR9’s, significantly COLDER heat range than stock.

Parade riding style?
Bank robber style?

Whoever mentioned going to hotter plugs clearly falls into the former category.

Are you struggling with plugs fouling?

not really struggling with fouling plugs. riding style - probably in-between your parade and bank robber - I would say cautiously-spirited. at my age, my thrill seeking days are over - ;)

So, do not fit hotter plugs.

This article can help you:

I went to my local NAPA to get a box of BP 7ES, amongst other items. I got the box I was looking for, but the manager told me that these had been superseded by BPR 7ES. Those of you who run with EIs may want to consider Denso, Champion or Bosch replacements, or swap out your 5K caps for zero K caps.

Best.

In the FWIW department, I work in a NAPA store. There are as of right now about 150 of the NGK 1034 (BP7ES) plugs still in various warehouses around the country and they show a supercession to NGK 5534 (BRP7ES). NAPA, being what they are, if you order the 1034 you just might end up with the superceded number. Br wary.

Thanks MikeG. Since my original post I have found and captured 4 more boxes (of 4), so I now have 20 on hand for my Commando; I doubt that I'll run of these.

Best.
