1) The chain side is the left side. The white wire should have a green stripe, this is not grounded, but attached to one of your Zener Diodes. You have another Zener on the right side. The red, however, is a ground. It should be attached on the back of one of the Z Plate bolts. Same with the right side.

2) The kickstand is missing the rubber bumper, that may help. Also, if there is any sloppiness at the kickstand pivot point, you may need to replace the bushing.

3) Reserve is on the left side, and yes, you usually run on just one side. Some people use both sides to alleviate fuel starvation, ie. wide throttle openings.

4) The grip length should be about 5 1/4 inches. If yours are this size, just move the switches toward the grip. On the throttle side, you will have to push the grip in further after moving the switch, because of the throttle sleeve.

5) As for the horn, well, it takes a really brave soul to go there. Others may be able to expand on this. In a nutshell, it seems that the bike was built around the horn, therefore, much has to be removed to access the horn.

The good news is that I learned ALL this from this forum. It really is a treasure.

2) the sidestand is a pain to use because its tucked right under the exhaust. I bent out the bottom part but it still isnt enough, any ideas?

The prong seems to be bent the wrong way?
It should look more like this.

3) Where is the reserve fuel wise? Both petcocks seem to have on/off only? Do I run with only one on and use the other as the reserve?

They could both be "reserve" fuel taps/petcocks? Or one of them may be a "main" tap?
You could try draining the tank to see if any fuel remains trapped on one "side" of the tank tunnel?

The original MkIII main & res. taps had small plates attached to them to identify which was which.

I have gaps on the handlebar controls. Do these look like OEM grips because they seem too short?

If the throttle sleeve has been replaced in the past, then it could be too long, so you may have to shorten it slightly before the grip can be pushed on fully and the throttle/switch unit position can then be adjusted?
If you do shorten the throttle sleeve, just make sure it's left long enough so there's a small gap between the grip and the throttle/switch assembly when the grip is fully home, otherwise the grip can bind against it, which can stop the throttle from closing properly.

the horn is not working. When I hit the button I only hear a faint attempt of a sound.I was attempting to check voltage but its in a very tricky spot.Would I be right in asking that the oil tank needs to be removed to access the horn to test/replace it?

I found the only way I could get the horn (any horn) to work reliably on my MkIII was to fit a relay.

Thanks for all answers so far.Im sure the sidestand is bent incorrectly like you said gonna get to that later in the week.
zeiner diode also on list to ground properly.Heres a pic of the left petcock BTW.
The grips I'm going to measure against the throttle and keep whichever is original
The horn is going on the back burner at the moment.

Did you check to see if the the rubber bumper is on the sidestand?

Thanks guys latest update
1) Zener wire correctly identified and reattached to rear of Z plate
2) Sidestand is missing rubber bumper for sure.Placed order for a new one to see if that helps.
3) Grips are not original as they are about 4". OEM ones on the way
5) Cant see any difference on the petcocks to indicate which is reserve.I ran the bike yesterday for half an hour with the left petcock in off position without any issues so thats my reserve from now on.

Getting back to the horn.Is oil tank removal the easiest/only way to get to it?

Main on left, reserve on right when it left the factory.
Edited per L.A.B Unless it a Mk3, then reversed.
See next post for more details.

Drain the tank and unscrew the right pedcock from the tank. If proper it will have a tube aprox 2" inside the screen. This will of course allow for a reserve amount of gas. The left (reserve) will not have this tube. That's all there is to it.

MKIII info

Finally got the machine registered and inspected and out for a ride.We are having a bike run on Saturday and I really wanted to show the bike off but now that wont happen.Bike was stalling at idle for no apparent reason. There was gas in the tank both petcocks open but nothing appearing at the tickler.when I got home I pulled the lines off the petcocks and nothing.Took the tank off and removed the petcocks and found this

The one on the left had a similar type mesh sleeve on it too but doesn't it look like someone replaced the reserve with a another main?

While in the area I noticed the air filter was separating from the carbs and no twisting or coaxing could get it back on so I pulled that out too and revealed this butchering of the rubber. Is this necessary for this filter to fit right? Now previous to finding out all this while I was at the inspection shop I mentioned what was happening to the mechanic. He is the real deal in our area for British bikes and tried to adjust the carbs to get a good idle but was having great difficulty. He mentioned that the carbs were not responding satisfactorily to his adjustments and now I think because the filter was only ever partially on that may have been the problem.what do you guys think?
