I plan on making my own custom wiring harness this winter. Can anyone recommend free software or a method of drawing a wiring schematic on a pc or mac?

Thanks for any advice.

Garage / shed wall or clear and use the workbench, mark on length of wires run them out, sleeve them up terminate them, test and voila, one wiring loom. I wouldn't waste me time doing it in cad for a once only job like this. Anything you are unsure of finished length wise jut shorten and terminate when in-situ. This will be a job I will undertake this winter, but modified to remove redundant wires and add in tech charging and camera power supplies.

I used VISIO (a MS product) to construct my harness diagrams. This is a general sketching program also useful for building layouts. It is not free. The diagrams are quite easy to modify.

If the original wire loom is available, use it to make a nail board. Then put in new wire and terminate in situ as Madnorton has suggested.

Make a decent drawing of any changes to stock wiring you make for future reference. Most importantly, label all wires at both ends. I use a Brother P-Touch label maker, then place a sleeve of transparent shrink tubing over the label to keep it from "flagging".
