I just took into possession a 73 Commando 850 (some assembly required, battery not included) and I hope to chronicle the build from borderline basketcase to proper cafe racer in somewhat of a period correct fashion with the exception of electronic ignition & powdercoated frame & swing arm and I do plan on reconstructing the wiring harness.
First order of business is to find a few replacement parts. First on the list is a replacement kickstart shaft. One of the previous owners decided to weld the kick lever to the shaft when the splines gave up the ghost. I can find levers all day long via e-bay or various other parts suppliers. The shaft, on the other hand, is another story. If someone out there has such an animal or knows where to find said shaft, there's a couple of pints in it for you if you're local, otherwise just eternal thanks.

Cheers!

Or if you have access to a mill have the non-splilned end squared and use a kicker from a shovelhead!

Excellent idea :D

No pic's of it done on a norton but my shovelhead had a square shaft end and the kicker had a pinch bolt. Never had any issues with that one loosening up with no splines. Shovel kickers are easily had on fleabay or swapmeet. The job can probably be done in a garage with a careful eye for measurment with the kicker and a grinder. It's what I would do.

I'm kind of diggin the idea of using a shovelhead kicker, cheap, stout & unique! Great Idea, I'll post some pics when I get it rolling. Thanks for the idea!
