Thanks for all the replies although some maybe a bit technical for me after two weeks of Classic bike ownership... taking carb apart etc... think I'd be more comfortable with someone that knew what they are doing showing me at first..
As a vintage bike owner/RIDER, you WILL become a mechanic at some level. :D

I understand you want a tutor, but, it may be electronic tutor nowadays.

Norman White, Peter Lovell, all booked 6 months and more in advance.Mick Hemmings too.Youve got SRM in Wales.Pushrod performance,I havent tried. This was in last few weeks.Thats my list of Norton Guys in uk.Only advice I can offer is to get some spanners for Christmas.

As concurs states, you will need to become your own mechanic at some point. Having a nearby experience buddy can be great, but got to bite the bullet at some point.

This forum is a terrific place to get your questions answered. You will find the depth of knowledge and experience here seemingly limitless.

Search on line for Amal carb tuning tips/guides. The Wassell units are meant to be exact reproduction of the high end Amal Premiers and use all the same settings, components interchangeable.

Your issue may just be poor idle circuit setting or some clogging of those circuits. Learn how to clean the tiny circuits and jets.

My bike runs a single Amal to simplify my troubleshooting as I too am new to all classic bikes. I managed to resuscitate my 74 850 from decades of sitting in someone's parlour...primarily by getting loads of help from these forums. I had it on the road within three or four months...so don't be worried for your bike.
Does it puff smoke out one pipe or other when you blip the throttle? Mine started doing that after I'd put close to 4000 miles on it this season. Turned out to be failed intake valve seals. I found a way on these forums how to change these seals without pulling the head off.
Smoke cured.

You say it has just been restored. It is possible that the head gasket needs re-torquing, I would start with that first. If so, then the valve clearance needs to be adjusted. Also, I believe the 850s require a different spray tube than the 750s. something to check. The correct one has a cut out on the motor side, visable (barely) by removing the slide and looking down the bore. Its the little brass thing the needle goes through.
Question for others...do ALL 850s require the cut-down spray tube?

as you are based in Twickenham, SW London, you are not that far away from the Norton Owners club SW London if they still meet in Battersea –it’s been an awful long time since I last went there.
