most would likely say 1000rpm idle is perfect, personally I like 1100

You need a Haynes workshop manual asap!

Someone other than me must be able to direct you to a good source?

Dave, looks to me like this is an opportunity to buy a flamed yellow Corbin at discount.

i would gladly trade the corbin seat or it will be for sale after i find one that i like better and is also more comfortable. it also came with a windshield that wrapped around the headlight that i'd like to get rid of.

thanks to everyone for the welcome. i'm sure i'll be posting more questions soon as i become more familiar with the bike. i'll check the triple tree and swingarm to see if they are correct. the previous owner told me the original front end was bent and he liked the drum brake set up better due to the resevoir interfering with the bars he had at the time.

i still have to locate a good manual for the bike, any recommendations on the best one to get?

The factory shop manual is the best and sitll available at dealers or on a CD. You might want to find a copy of the Norton Owner Club's Commando Service Notes book and the INOA also has a similar. publication.

( I am trying to bring back the rear mudflap, most of the numpties on here shun us mudflap equipped Commando owners, so what are you, a pro or anti mudflap guy ?, answer carefully....... :D ).

Where does one find one of these stylish front mudflaps?

The tech site for this forum, very top thread, has a link for a PDF of the original shop manual. It will get you started. I downloaded one to the desktop and use it often.

Re mudflaps, I don't know exactly where to find one, my bike came with one. But I will be on the look out.

Regarding my comments about starters...I think it was obvious I was just trying to stir the pot!

Better yet is the free one as per rvich posted.

now that the yellow is gone, i feel like its my bike. also, it matches my other toy pictured below. still have to put the decals on, but i'm gonna give it a good wetsand and buff first. i have a new seat and bars on the way, so the flaming corbin is up for grabs if anyone is interested. also meaning to get pictures of the fairing for the person who pm'd me.

DIY, welcome to the forums. I found the shop manual and parts manual at the above link. Great and the price is right!!!

have fun.

Darrell

thanks! a few more pics for anyone interested in seeing them after some reassembly and installing the drag bars. i know this isn't a popular color for british bikes, but, i like it.

If it's done right the color doesn't matter. So what if you want to match the car, I have no problem with that…

thanks, i am anxious to get a seat back on it, should be here in a couple weeks. i still have the flaming yellow corbin that i'd trade or sell, but i don't want to run that on my bike.

do any of you guys who are knowledgeable on the norton market think that it would be unrealistic for me to find somebody willing to trade an atlas project for this commando?

Interesting color choice. Good-looking bike! I think the PO must have really cared about it. There are lots of small details that an average schmuck wouldn't have spent money on. Good to see that not all POs are careless d!ckheads who send their bikes twisting down the highway and then send them off to Honda shops for repair.. /facepalm

Trade..for an atlas?! Whyyyyyyyy???????

yes, the PO was a real fanatic about his british bikes. i believe he was the second owner of the bike. i know he bought it from another local in '88 who was really into nortons and he apparently put shorter gearing in the transmission.

this bike has been well cared for, but the more i look at older nortons, i think the dominator or atlas is more of what i'd like to end up with at some point. they have the older, "bare bones" look to them which i really dig.

I went with some "retro" touches on my commando that make it stand out against other 73's. You could always do something similar with yours if you wanted. I considered it a half-completed canvas so I could do pretty much whatever the hell I wanted. ;)

Ultimately though, you should have what you want so I say go for it. I'm hoping to someday put my slimline featherbed frame and commando motor together for the best of both (atlas and commando) worlds, but that's a future project for sure..

do you have any pictures of some of the things you did to your bike? i'd be interested in seeing them.
