A friend has asked me to help him with his 56 Domi 88. It is in boxes, and we have no timetable in getting it back up and running.
I don't have the parts book for it, not that they are much good with a limited number of pictures, and you had better be able to understand what things are called in their books. Any good sources of good clear pictures on how it goes together? The shop books aren't much better. So, any advice would be appreciated.

Try the Haynes owners workshop manual. It covers all the theatherbed twins. (The first issue is the best )

well haynes do not cover all norton twins if you look its covering the atlas twin, were as early 1950s twins have some diffrentces in tin ware and engine parts

That is true, but they are minor details.
The one I'm working on is a generator/dynamo model. Some small differences that's for sure. The dynamo that came with the bike has a tapered shaft and a sprocket. Looking at it I think it should be one with a straight shaft and a gear. Also, is the gear if it is indeed a gear driven one, the same as one used on an A-10 BSA?

Yes, gear driven on the Norton with a gear behind, and co-axial with, the cam sprocket.

You may do well to join the UK based Norton Owners Club .
Many knowledgeable folks there for these machines. I have a 56
Model 99 in large lumps . Haven’t done a thing with it due to failing mojo but that may change one day . I also have an original parts book -
agreed it’s not much use - and Roy Bacon’s Norton Twin Restoration.
If you need me to search for specific info - text or images- in Bacon’s book let me know .

Richard,
Thank you for your kind offer, I have those books that you referred to. Bacons Norton Twin Restoration isn't much better when you have a specific question. I was looking at the rods that came with the bike and I was amazed they used an all-alloy rod including the rod caps. I will need to polish and weigh the rods and pistons to make sure they are the same weight. I know a guy who builds race engines, and I will talk to him it. I may have to have the big ends resized if they have gone oval. Can't just slap i back together and expect it to run well.
Again, thanks to all who have responded to my questions.
John

These are the only illustrations in the parts book . If you need pics of the accompanying text LMK.

Richard,
Thank you for your kind offer of taking your dynamo off and taking pictures. I hope it doesn't come to that.
Looking at the pictures from the parts book that you sent me it is very interesting how much different what I have is from what the parts book shows.
The frame, front forks and transmission are way different. So, it is time to look at Bacons book and the vin number and see exactly what year this is. Maybe foreign markets got upgrades before the home market got them? Time for more research, I think.
Regards
John

Pictures of what you have ?

The vin number is 70440, both on the engine and frame. Nothing shows up in my Bacon books for the Norton vin number.
Having some issues add the pictures for some reason.

I'm not a VIP member and posting pictures is almost impossible. Time to correct that I guess.

Let's try that again. For the most part this bike is in boxes.
